GLS Invests €21 Million in New PLAZA Logistics Centre, Expands Workforce to 100

GLS on Tuesday inaugurated a new logistics center at the Zaragoza Logistics Platform (PLAZA), the result of a €21 million investment developed jointly with Montepino. The opening will allow the company to quadruple its processing capacity in Zaragoza and expand its workforce from about 60 employees to nearly 100.

The new facility can handle up to 16,000 parcels per hour, compared with the 4,000 processed by GLS’s previous center in Ciudad del Transporte. The move also increases available space and operational capacity: the new warehouse is twice the size of the former site and has three times as many loading and unloading bays.

One of the center’s key features is the automation of sorting processes, designed specifically to accommodate activity increases linked to e-commerce campaigns. The facility will serve both GLS’s network of partner agencies and companies that use its distribution services.

GLS Spain Managing Director Roberto Martínez described the launch of the facility as “a strategic commitment to Zaragoza and Aragón.” Its location at PLAZA also gives the company access to some of the main transport corridors running through Zaragoza, including the A-2 toward Madrid and Barcelona, the A-23 toward Valencia, and the AP-68 toward Bilbao.

A new investment in an expanding PLAZA

The inauguration comes amid growth at the Zaragoza Logistics Platform. PLAZA marks 25 years since its development began this year and currently hosts more than 600 companies and around 16,000 workers, according to figures from the Government of Aragón.

This growth is being accompanied by a project to expand the platform by approximately 89 hectares, which was declared a Regional Investment of Interest with General Interest status in February. The Aragón government puts the planned investment at €424 million, of which €44 million is earmarked for site infrastructure works and the remainder for the future development of the plots.

Projects to improve access are also underway. These include the new northern access road and the Turiaso Bridge, awarded for €19.9 million and scheduled to take 16 months to complete.

During GLS’s inauguration, Housing, Public Works, Logistics and Territorial Cohesion Minister Octavio López placed the company’s arrival within PLAZA’s broader growth process. According to figures provided by the minister, logistics activity accounts for 7.7% of Aragón’s GDP and supports around 36,000 direct jobs in the region.

The new GLS facility therefore adds another corporate investment to the PLAZA area and strengthens Zaragoza’s capacity as a distribution hub between some of the Iberian Peninsula’s main freight corridors and connections to Europe.
