SOMMOS Earns Silver Member Certification for Its Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Strategy

SOMMOS Winery, located in Barbastro (Huesca), has earned Silver Member certification from International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA), an international recognition of its strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The accreditation validates measures implemented from the vineyard through wine tourism and follows several years of work to measure and reduce its environmental impact.

SOMMOS earns IWCA Silver Member certification for cutting emissions

The certification places the winery from the Alto Aragón region among wine-sector companies holding this distinction, alongside names such as Champagne house Piper-Heidsieck and Bordeaux château Troplong Mondot. IWCA has thus recognized SOMMOS’s efforts to advance emissions reductions across its production operations.

The winery frames this recognition within a broad sustainability strategy developed over several years. Its approach combines reducing environmental impact with process improvements, operational efficiency and the creation of long-term value in its local area.

Measures implemented include generating a substantial share of the energy it consumes through photovoltaic installations. SOMMOS has also reduced the weight of its bottles and the amount of glass used to manufacture them, while optimizing logistics to lower transportation-related emissions.

These measures enabled the company to reduce its energy consumption by 19% over the past year and its consumption of gases such as propane by 32%.

IWCA promotes net-zero emissions target for the wine sector

Its Silver Member status strengthens SOMMOS’s presence in International Wineries for Climate Action, an organization founded by Familia Torres and Jackson Family Wines to foster collaboration among wineries in different countries in addressing climate change.

IWCA has set a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The organization brings together wineries committed to climate action and has become an increasingly influential benchmark for professionals, distributors and consumers in the international wine market.

The Barbastro winery expands its project with Sommos Garnacha in Calatayud

SOMMOS belongs to Grupo Costa and is one of the leading wineries in the Somontano Protected Designation of Origin. From Barbastro, it produces a range of wines tied to the grape varieties cultivated in the area and their adaptation to the region’s soils and microclimates.

The group also operates a second winery in Murero (Zaragoza), Sommos Garnacha. There, it cultivates old bush-trained Garnacha vines to produce wines under the Calatayud D.O.P., in an area defined by clay and slate soils, an extreme continental climate, steep slopes and small-scale production.

This project expands SOMMOS’s portfolio with four Garnacha labels: Alquez, Lamín, Araia and Tiaso.
