ESA Awards Indra Contract for Second-Generation Galileo Stations

The European Space Agency (ESA) has awarded Indra two contracts to develop the remote stations for Galileo’s second generation. The projects cover the sensor and uplink stations of Europe’s satellite navigation system, will run for four years, and will involve operations in Madrid and Barcelona.

The first covers the design, development, and delivery of the new Galileo sensor stations, known as GSS. These facilities receive and monitor satellite signals and generate measurements to assess their quality and help determine orbital positions. Indra will lead the work from Barcelona’s 22@ technology district, in collaboration with GMV, responsible for satellite navigation signal reception and processing solutions, and Thales SIX, which will provide security capabilities.

The second contract concerns the ULS uplink stations, responsible for transmitting mission data to satellites so that the constellation can distribute navigation information to users. The project will be carried out from Madrid with subcontractors specializing in satellite communications, active antennas, radio frequency, cloud infrastructure, and cybersecurity.

Indra will serve as the prime contractor and will be responsible for the design, development, and delivery of both types of stations. According to information released on the projects, the new infrastructure will offer greater operational flexibility and resilience to interference, and will be required to serve both current satellites and those developed in the future.
