The Ignacio Zuloaga gallery in Fuendetodos is hosting an exhibition devoted to the graphic work of María Cruz Sarvisé (1923-2023), featuring 82 original prints by the Huesca-born artist. The exhibition, organized by the Goya-Fuendetodos Cultural Consortium of the Zaragoza Provincial Council, will remain open through December 31, 2026.
Fuendetodos brings together María Cruz Sarvisé’s nearly unseen graphic work
The exhibition brings together virtually all of María Cruz Sarvisé’s original engravings, a body of work little known to critics and, according to the information provided, never previously exhibited. The artist created and printed the pieces on the etching press in her Huesca studio.
The exhibition offers an insight into a less widely known dimension of the artist, described as Huesca’s most important painter of the 20th century. The provincial deputy for Culture, Charo Lázaro, noted that Sarvisé shunned publicity, prioritizing her daily studio work over public appearances.
The exhibition’s curator and president of Zaragoza’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Luis, Fernando Alvira, emphasized that the artist developed her own distinctive style of painting, recognizable throughout her career. That identity was grounded in the importance of drawing, a quality she also brought to printmaking through her work with forms, lines and textures.
María Cruz Sarvisé’s artistic and teaching career in Aragon
María Cruz Sarvisé spent most of her life and professional career in the province of Huesca. She studied fine arts at Barcelona’s Llotja School, where she refined her printmaking technique, and combined her artistic practice with teaching.
She worked for an extended period as a drawing teacher at San Alberto Magno Secondary School in Sabiñánigo, before continuing her career at schools in Zaragoza and Huesca. In 1996, she became a member of the Royal Academy of Noble and Fine Arts of San Luis, which later awarded her its Gold Medal in recognition of a lifetime dedicated to art.
The Goya-Fuendetodos Consortium’s programming also seeks to raise the profile of work by women artists. Its director, Ricardo Centellas, pointed to the presence of women painters, printmakers, sculptors and architects in the organization’s offerings, citing the recent exhibition of graphic work by Cristina de Middel as a precedent.
