Aragón is on the verge of reclaiming one of its most unique heritage treasures. Following an intense comprehensive restoration process, the Palace of the Barons of Valdeolivos, located in the Huesca town of Fonz, is entering a new phase that will allow the public to access a distinctive space where history, art, and memory intertwine.
With an investment close to 1.7 million euros, financed through European funds from the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, the works have structurally consolidated the building, restored its most valuable architectural features, and adapted its spaces to convert it into a future visitable house-museum.
Located in the heart of Fonz, one of the most notable historical sites in High Aragón, the palace stands as a significant reference in Aragonese noble architecture. Built between the 16th and 17th centuries, it served for generations as the residence of the Ric family, a lineage closely linked to the political and cultural history of Aragón.
The intervention has had a dual objective: to ensure the monument’s preservation and to prepare it to become a new tourist and cultural attraction for the Cinca Medio region. This has involved significant work on structural reinforcement, facade restoration, recovery of interior spaces, and modernization of facilities, all while respecting the historical and artistic value of the property.
One of the project’s most notable aspects is the future establishment of a house-museum, which will allow visitors to understand how an Aragonese noble family lived throughout various historical periods. The property retains an extraordinary collection of movable assets, documents, works of art, and decorative objects accumulated over the centuries.
Among the standout pieces is a unique collection of Eastern objects gathered in the 19th century by Enrique Otal y Ric during his diplomatic travels in Asia. Chinese and Japanese porcelains, lacquers, silks, and paintings on rice paper comprise an unusual heritage for an Aragonese noble residence, adding distinctive value to the future museum.
The restoration has also involved a complex process of cataloging and preventive conservation. More than a thousand pieces were inventoried, packed, and temporarily relocated to ensure their protection during the renovations. Once the process is complete, they will return to their original locations to be included in the museum circuit.
The Palace of the Barons of Valdeolivos not only represents a significant historical legacy. Its reopening could become a catalyst for the tourist development of Fonz and the surrounding area. The combination of monumental heritage, historical archives, artistic collections, and architectural appeal offers an opportunity to strengthen the cultural offering in High Aragón and attract new visitors interested in experiences tied to the history and identity of the region.
With the completion of the renovations, Aragón adds a new example of heritage recovery with a future-oriented vision.
