Peru will be the guest country at the Fiestas del Pilar 2025 to strengthen ties with the Hispanic-American community
Peru will become the protagonist of the Fiestas del Pilar 2025, with a prominent participation in the Offering of Flowers where its floral flag will occupy a special place on the mantle of the Virgin. This decision aims to strengthen the connections with the Peruvian community in Zaragoza, which has more than 3,500 registered residents in the city.
Enthusiasm in the Peruvian community following the announcement
The Peruvian community in Zaragoza has received the news with great joy, as reflected in the official statements. Lidia Vásquez, advisor at the honorary consulate of Zaragoza, highlights that the Peruvian community feels very connected to the Fiestas del Pilar and has participated in them for decades through various associations.
Cultural and folkloric representation of Peru
During the Offering of Flowers, the Peruvian delegation will participate with traditional costumes and folklore from the three main regions of the country: Coast, Highlands, and Jungle. The representation will include traditional dances, especially the northern marinera, which Vásquez describes as a dance valued worldwide.
Sara Fernández, Councillor for Culture, Education, and Tourism, has emphasized the great richness of Peruvian art, culture, tradition, and folklore, noting that the festivities will provide an opportunity to learn more about them through the activities prepared in conjunction with the Peruvian consulate and embassy.
The Hispanic-American bond through language
The honorary consulate underlines the strong connection between the two countries, explaining that most Peruvians living outside the country come to Spain because we are united by language. Although Peru has two other co-official languages, Quechua and Aymara, the Spanish language unites us.
History of invited countries to the festivities
This initiative began in 2012 with Ecuador as the first invited country, followed by the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Nicaragua, Cuba, Costa Rica, Bolivia, El Salvador, and exceptionally, Ukraine. Guatemala was the featured country last year. The mantle of the Virgin of the Pillar on the upcoming October 12 will display Peru’s floral flag, crafted with tons of flowers.
The City Council, the consulate, and the embassy of Peru are currently working to define the full participation of the community during the upcoming festivities, seeking new ways to bring Peruvian tradition and folklore closer to the people of Zaragoza and visitors.
