Armed Forces Activate Sofex 26 to Coordinate Special Units

The Joint Special Operations Command (MCOE) has launched Sofex 26, the annual exercise bringing together the Armed Forces’ leading special operations units. The maneuvers will take place over several weeks in coastal and inland settings across Spain.

Participants include the Navy’s Naval Special Warfare Force, the Army Special Operations Command, and the Air and Space Force’s Parachute Sapper Squadron. The exercise is being directed by the MCOE from Retamares Base in Madrid, with support from other military facilities, including Rota Naval Base in Cádiz.

Sofex 26 is intended to test coordination among the units and the joint special operations structure in crisis situations and against emerging threats. It includes air assets, particularly helicopters for inserting and extracting teams, as well as unmanned systems and operational- and tactical-level remote-control platforms.

Three training phases

The exercise begins with a preparation and planning phase involving the various command posts through CPX exercises. This is followed by a cross-training phase to coordinate the procedures of the participating teams.

The final stage consists of a live exercise, known as Livex, with missions designed around the objectives established during the planning process. This phase includes intelligence collection and exploitation tasks, as well as real-time operational analysis and planning processes.
