The Government has authorized an investment of €51.53 million, excluding VAT, to tender the installation of the overhead contact line on the Teruel-Sagunto railway section. The project will complete the 25-kilovolt electrification of a line included in a modernization plan with total investment exceeding €630 million.
Electrification of the 130 kilometers between Teruel and Sagunto enters the tendering phase
The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility will tender, through Adif, the electrification works for the nearly 130 kilometers between Teruel and Sagunto. The contract includes the installation of the overhead contact line, a key component in completing the corridor’s electrification.
The work will include foundations for poles and anchorages, the installation of poles, and the stringing of the catenary and contact wires. Brackets, stay wires, tensioning equipment, connections, insulators, sectioning equipment, dropper wires, feeders, disconnectors, and protection equipment will also be installed.
The electrical system will be supplied from planned substations in La Puebla de Valverde and Segorbe. At the same time, Adif is continuing work to modify the clearances of 22 overpasses and nine tunnels, while advancing the upgrade of the control, command, and signaling systems at the route’s 15 stations.
Work is also progressing between Teruel and Zaragoza
Modernization of the corridor is also continuing along the more than 180 kilometers between Teruel and Zaragoza. Electrification and clearance-modification work is ongoing on this section, alongside the construction of new electrical substations in Cariñena and Villafranca.
Adif is also deploying new control, command, and signaling systems, as well as traffic-control equipment. The program includes other measures, such as the construction of a passing loop in Cella for 740-meter trains, the removal of a level crossing in the municipality of Teruel, and complementary work on the trackbed and track superstructure.
The €630 million plan aims to strengthen rail capacity and freight transport
The master plan covers the 311 kilometers of the Zaragoza-Teruel-Sagunto line and calls for improvements in interoperability, reliability, capacity, and operating speeds. The modernization also aims to reduce journey times, cut disruptions, and streamline the infrastructure’s maintenance requirements.
The project will adapt the line to national and international high-performance rail standards and boost rail freight traffic. To this end, it provides for higher axle loads and the construction of passing loops for trains of up to 750 meters.
According to the project document, electrification will prevent annual emissions of approximately 5,000 metric tons of CO₂ and the consumption of 2.1 million liters of diesel. The measures may receive co-financing from the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and are linked to Sustainable Development Goals 9 and 11.
