USS Arleigh Burke Enters Navantia Dry Dock in Cádiz

The guided-missile destroyer USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51), deployed at Naval Station Rota, entered dry dock at Navantia’s shipyard in Cádiz on October 7, 2026, for scheduled maintenance and modernization work.

The operation is the first of its kind for U.S. Forward Deployed Naval Forces Europe within the Sixth Fleet’s area of responsibility since these destroyers arrived on the continent. The work will involve the ship’s crew, U.S. military and civilian personnel from the Forward Deployed Regional Maintenance Center, and Navantia teams.

The U.S. Navy aims to incorporate dry-docking work into maintenance periods carried out outside the United States. Sixth Fleet Commander Vice Adm. J. T. Anderson said the capability would improve the material readiness of ships deployed in Europe.

Maintenance in Spain

Navantia already provides maintenance and repair services to the U.S. destroyers stationed at Rota. The Arleigh Burke’s entry expands that work to include a dry-docking operation, although the information released does not specify the technical scope of the work, its duration, or its cost.

The U.S. Navy had also launched a market survey to identify companies able to meet future requirements at Rota, ranging from hull work and mechanical and electrical systems to electronic equipment, combat systems, and dry-docking services. That process was under review and did not in itself entail the award of a contract.

One of five destroyers stationed at Rota

According to the Sixth Fleet, the USS Arleigh Burke is one of five U.S. Forward Deployed Naval Forces Europe destroyers stationed at Rota. It is assigned to Task Force 65 and forms part of the U.S. contribution to NATO’s integrated air and missile defense architecture.

These vessels operate within the areas of responsibility of U.S. commands for Europe and Africa. The Sixth Fleet falls under U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, headquartered in Naples.
