Zaragoza Gains Recognition as an International Destination: Inquiries from Foreign Tourists Rise by 51%

Zaragoza is taking significant steps to establish itself as an urban tourist destination capable of attracting visitors beyond the national market. The report from the August 15 holiday weekend reveals a particularly noteworthy statistic: inquiries by foreign tourists at municipal tourism offices increased by 51% compared to the same festive period in 2025.

Between Friday, August 14, and Sunday, August 16, these offices handled a total of 2,501 inquiries, an 11% increase from the previous year. Of these, 1,240 were from international visitors, representing 49.5% of the total.

In other words, nearly one in every two users assisted during those days came from abroad.

This result coincides with an exceptional moment for Zaragoza’s profile: the total solar eclipse on August 12, which attracted international attention to the city and acted as one of the major draws for traveling to the Aragonese capital.

However, the holiday data allows us to observe more than just the temporary effect of an extraordinary event. Visitors arriving in Zaragoza showed a notable interest in its heritage and cultural offerings, precisely two of the resources that the city has been building much of its tourism proposal upon.

France, the leading international market

France emerged as the top source of inquiries during the three days. Among international tourism, the French accounted for 38% of the inquiries, followed by Italy at 12%, the United Kingdom at 9%, and Germany at 7%.

Additionally, compared to the previous year, the share of markets such as France, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Colombia increased.

These figures are particularly interesting for a city that, due to its geographic location, historical heritage, gastronomy, and connections with other major Spanish destinations, has room to further enhance its presence in international circuits.

Among domestic visitors, after local Zaragoza residents, the main sources were Catalonia at 20%, Madrid at 16%, and the Valencian Community at 12%.

Heritage and culture, the main reasons to visit Zaragoza

The data also helps clarify what visitors are looking for when they come to the city.

The average stay during these days ranged from two to three days, while the monumental and cultural offerings emerged as the primary motivation for the trip. A total of 54% of inquiries were related to monuments and museums; 14% involved tourist services, and 9% pertained to transportation.

Heritage thus confirms its status as one of Zaragoza’s major tourist attractions. From the Basilica del Pilar and La Seo to the Aljafería, the Roman legacy, or Goya’s influence, the city offers resources capable of supporting an urban getaway lasting several days, complemented by gastronomy, commerce, and cultural experiences.

Municipal tourist services also grow

The positive trend was not limited to information offices.

A total of 2,288 people participated in guided tours or utilized the Tourist Bus and the Mirador de las Cuatro Culturas at the Torreón de la Zuda. Collectively, these services saw a 10% increase in activity compared to the same period in 2025.

The Tourist Bus reached 1,116 travelers, a 9% rise. Particularly noteworthy was the demand for the Megabus, which increased by 37%.

There was also a growing interest in viewing Zaragoza from above. The Mirador de las Cuatro Culturas at the Torreón de la Zuda welcomed 1,109 visitors, a 15% increase from the previous year.

The challenge: turning opportunity into sustained growth

The eclipse has provided an extraordinary visibility opportunity for Zaragoza, making it difficult to completely separate its effect from the positive results recorded during the holiday. This makes the next challenge understanding to what extent this increased international presence can be maintained once the event’s impact fades.

In any case, the data shows interesting signals: the number of foreign visitors is increasing, relevant international markets are growing, heritage and culture remain the main points of interest, and municipal tourist services are seeing more users.

For Zaragoza, the challenge now is to transform this visibility into permanent positioning, ensuring that those who discover the city through a specific event find ample reasons to stay, recommend it, and return.

August’s holiday weekend leaves at least one encouraging conclusion: Zaragoza is successfully attracting more and more attention from outside Spain.
