Zaragoza Launches ‘Latir Hispano’ Awards to Celebrate the Contributions of the Hispanic Community

The city of Zaragoza has introduced a new initiative to honor the contributions of its Hispanic community through the annual ‘Latir Hispano’ awards. This program, recently announced by Mayor Natalia Chueca, seeks to recognize the talents and efforts of individuals from Latin American backgrounds who have enriched the cultural and social fabric of the city.

The ‘Latir Hispano’ awards aim to celebrate the dedication and diverse talents of those within the Hispanic community, reflecting the vibrant cultural ties that link various Spanish-speaking nations. Categories for the awards will include culture, innovation, art, education, gastronomy, and entrepreneurship, with the specific categories potentially varying each year based on nominations and focal points of the awards.

Among the standout recipients for the 2024 awards were prominent figures such as journalist Luis Humberto Menéndez from Heraldo de Aragón, Michelin-starred chef Ramsés González, and footballer Cristian Álvarez from Real Zaragoza. The selection process involves a jury chaired by Ángel Lorén, the councilor of Presidency, alongside representatives from various organizations including the Federation of Entrepreneurs of Commerce and Services (ECOS), the Association of Self-Employed Workers (ATA), and the Latin American Association for Integration (Asolaint).

These awards come as a testament to the considerable presence of the Hispanic community in Zaragoza, which encompasses around 77,000 residents of Latin American origin. The largest demographic stems from Colombia, followed by individuals from Nicaragua, Ecuador, Peru, among others. The initiative not only recognizes individual achievements but also underscores the significance of cultural diversity within the city.

The inaugural ‘Latir Hispano’ awards ceremony took place on November 25, 2024, in the reception hall of the City Hall, presided over by Mayor Natalia Chueca. This event served as a notable occasion to honor the contributions of the Hispanic community, showcasing their vital role in Zaragoza’s cultural landscape.

The ‘Latir Hispano’ awards embody Zaragoza’s commitment to appreciating and celebrating the diverse contributions of its Hispanic residents. This initiative highlights the city’s role as a cultural and social hub that cherishes the richness brought by its varied population.
