The Zaragoza Provincial Council has taken a significant step in its fight against unwanted loneliness by increasing its budget for this purpose fivefold, reaching 5 million euros. This increase will finance the operation of senior social centers in the province, covering essential expenses such as electricity and heating, while maintaining support for preventive activities and infrastructure improvements.
Budget Increase and Scope of the Plan
The Zaragoza Provincial Council’s plan to combat unwanted loneliness has seen a substantial budget increase, rising from 1 million to 5 million euros. This increase is aimed at subsidizing the operation of social and senior centers in the 292 municipalities of the province, as well as 3 local entities and 40 rural neighborhoods. The guidelines for this call are available in the Official Bulletin of the Province of Zaragoza, and municipalities have until June 8 to submit their applications. The initiative underscores the importance of addressing unwanted loneliness as a collective social challenge.
Areas of Action and Funding
The plan is structured into two main areas of action. The first, with a budget of 3.5 million euros, focuses on the maintenance and operation of senior social centers. This line includes aid to cover electricity and heating expenses for facilities such as retirement centers and teleclubs, with a subsidy that covers 100% of costs up to a maximum of 10,447.76 euros per entity.
The second line, endowed with 1.5 million euros, is divided between activities aimed at preventing loneliness and improving meeting spaces. Of this amount, 500,000 euros is allocated to activities that promote the autonomy and health of older adults, while 1 million euros is assigned to infrastructure investments to create more accessible and adapted environments.
Impact on the Community and Long-term Objectives
The activities funded by the plan aim to promote the autonomy of older adults, improve their physical and mental health, and encourage the use of information technologies. Initiatives such as physical exercise workshops, healthy eating courses, and cognitive stimulation programs will receive support. Additionally, projects that foster community participation and the creation of mutual support networks will be promoted.
Regarding investments in meeting spaces, priority will be given to improving social centers and eliminating architectural barriers, as well as creating digital spaces that facilitate technological inclusion. These actions are designed to strengthen community networks and enhance the quality of life for older adults in the province.
