Aragón to Allocate 3.1 Billion to Healthcare in 2027, 600 Million More

The Government of Aragon plans to allocate about €3.1 billion to health care in its 2027 budget, a figure that would be €600 million higher than the 2023 allocation. The announcement, made by regional President Jorge Azcón during a visit to the Aragon Blood and Tissue Bank, links the additional funding to new hospitals, health centers, and medical facilities.

Aragon raises health care budget to €3.1 billion in 2027

The Aragon regional government expects the 2027 health care budget to total around €3.1 billion, compared with the €2.5 billion allocated in 2023. The difference amounts to €600 million.

The investment is underpinned by several ongoing health care projects. The new Alcañiz Hospital already serves nearly 73,000 Aragon residents, while the future Obispo Polanco University Hospital in Teruel will include a linear accelerator scheduled for the first quarter of 2027. Once operational, it will spare patients from having to travel to Zaragoza.

The Government of Aragon also plans to move forward with the new Royo Villanova University Hospital. The site for the facility will be decided at the Health Council meeting scheduled for Thursday. It will be the first public hospital built in Zaragoza since the Autonomous Community was established.

The plan also includes new health centers in Cuarte de Huerva, Utebo, Caspe, Zuera, Azuara, and Arcosur. The Aragon Health Service employs nearly 28,000 workers, while Aragon has 4.3 physicians per 1,000 residents, 0.6 percentage points above the national average.

Aragon Blood and Tissue Bank marks 20 years with 900,000 donations

The Aragon Blood and Tissue Bank is marking two decades since its inauguration in September 2006. The center ensures the supply of blood components to the hospital network and also stores and processes human tissue and breast milk.

The institution currently has 28,000 blood donors and has recorded nearly 900,000 donations over its 20 years of operation. In 2025 alone, it handled around 45,000 donations, while coordinating some 200 units of blood per day and conducting up to six collection drives daily.

The bank employs 85 professionals and has introduced procedures and technologies aimed at strengthening the safety, traceability, and use of every donation.

Apheresis donations rise to 3,000 annually

Among the procedures carried out by the center is apheresis donation, a technique that selectively collects components such as plasma and platelets. These donations have increased from about 300 in 2006 to nearly 3,000 in 2025.

Aragon also has its first-ever Mobile Plasma Donation Unit, designed to bring the practice closer to regional districts and municipalities and increase plasma production capacity.

During the visit to the bank, Azcón highlighted the work of health care professionals, donors, and donor associations at an institution that brings together 20 years of activity related to hospital supply and donation in Aragon.
