The Government of Aragon will increase its planned investment in 2026 to €5 million to improve climate control in public schools. The Breathing Classrooms program, which has already funded initiatives at 116 schools and high schools, adds €3 million to the €2 million deployed in its first phase.
Aragon raises investment in public-school climate control to €5 million
The regional minister for Education, Science and Universities, Carmen Susín, announced the increase during a visit to CEIP Hermanos Marx in Zaragoza, one of the schools benefiting from the program’s first phase. The initiative aims to improve temperature conditions during the school day, both during heat waves and periods of extreme cold.
The additional €3 million will allow work to continue through the final months of 2026 and expand climate-control measures across Aragon’s public schools. The Education Department plans to combine immediate solutions with broader interventions.
The first phase of Breathing Classrooms began with a survey of schools to identify the most urgent needs. A total of 282 educational institutions responded, and 173 initiatives were ultimately approved at 116 public schools across Aragon.
More than 2,000 fans and 350 climate-control units in the first phase
The program initially had a budget of €2 million: €1.6 million was allocated to thermal-comfort measures and a further €400,000 to upgrading the electrical infrastructure required to install the equipment.
The measures reached 54 schools in Zaragoza province, 39 in Huesca and 23 in Teruel. The program delivered more than 2,000 fans and around 350 climate-control units, along with awnings, solar-control film, window louvers, vegetation, outdoor fountains and electrical upgrades.
At CEIP Hermanos Marx, the investment totals €17,617. The school has installed Armstrong-type fans integrated into the suspended ceilings of early-childhood classrooms, as well as blade fans in elementary-school areas. Principal Pilar Marín put the investment at about €17,000.
Education Department prepares structural upgrades for schools in 2027
The Education Department will also review electrical installations and compile an inventory of the condition of public schools. The assessment will help plan medium- and long-term upgrades, including the renovation of roofs and windows, improved facade insulation and boiler replacements.
For 2027, the department is planning an overall allocation of €15 million for comprehensive structural upgrades, covering roofs, windows, facades and electrical installations.
