The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) has taken an important step to strengthen freight transport in the Aragon region by launching a million-euro tender through Adif. With an investment of 49.5 million euros (including VAT), these actions are aimed at improving the interoperability and performance of the rail network running through Aragon.
Key projects include the electrification of the Zaragoza-Teruel-Sagunt line, which promises significant environmental benefits by replacing diesel traction, and the extension of sidings at strategic stations.
These improvements will increase the reliability and quality of freight transport in the region, consolidating Aragon as an important logistics hub on the Spanish rail map.
The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) has launched an ambitious plan to improve the efficiency of freight transport in the Aragon region through a landmark tender for a total value of 49.5 million euros (including VAT), under the supervision of Adif. These strategic investments are primarily aimed at strengthening the interoperability and performance of the rail network covering the region, especially for freight.
One of the most important projects is the electrification of the Zaragoza-Teruel-Sagunt line, which will receive an investment of 38.4 million euros. This initiative includes the construction of traction substations in Cariñena and Villafranca, as well as the installation of a 220 kV high-voltage overhead line and auto-transformer stations. The electrification of this line will be an important environmental advance, replacing diesel traction with electric traction, significantly reducing noise and related emissions. It will also improve the energy efficiency and sustainability of rail freight in the region.
Another outstanding tender is the extension of sidings at key stations along the Zaragoza-Caspe-Tarragona-Barcelona corridor, with an investment of more than €11.1 million. These improvements will focus on reaching a usable length of 750 meters for the sidings at the stations of Zaragoza, Chiprana, Nonaspe (in the province of Zaragoza) and Flix (in Tarragona). These actions will not only improve the performance of the Madrid-Barcelona corridor, but will also guarantee greater reliability and quality in the operation of freight trains.
With these strategic investments, Aragon will make a significant leap forward in its positioning as an important logistics center on the Spanish railway map. The electrification of the Zaragoza-Teruel-Sagunt line will allow for more sustainable and environmentally friendly freight transport, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and promoting energy efficiency. At the same time, the extension of the railway sidings will improve the capacity and efficiency of rail freight operations, thus increasing the region’s competitiveness in this strategic sector.
These actions reflect the commitment of Mitma and Adif to the modernization and development of rail transport in Aragon, strengthening the connectivity and efficiency of the Madrid-Barcelona corridor and consolidating Aragon as a key logistics hub for freight transport in Spain. This initiative opens up a promising horizon for the region and lays the foundations for a more sustainable, competitive and prosperous future for rail freight in Aragon.
