The upcoming construction of a new hangar at the Santa Cilia Aerodrome located in Huesca, Aragón. Awarded to Albas Tierz Constructora for €355,531, the project is set to commence at the end of 2023 and is expected to be completed by January 2025. This development aims to enhance facilities for general aviation and serves as the most significant investment since the aerodrome’s inauguration in 1998.
The Santa Cilia Aerodrome is poised for an important upgrade that will reinforce its status as a destination for recreational aviation and tourism in the Aragonese Pyrenees. Located just 15 kilometers from Jaca and 20 kilometers from the Pyrénées, this aerodrome already features two paved runways and two existing hangars—one in the northern area dedicated to gliders and motor gliders, and another in the southern area for aircraft and ultralights.
The new hangar will be constructed in the southern section of the aerodrome, adjacent to one of the existing hangars. Covering a total area of 551 square meters, it will be distributed across a ground floor and a mezzanine. This facility will be capable of accommodating one or two aircraft, specifically small planes or gliders with an average wingspan of approximately 20 meters.
The contract for the construction was awarded to Albas Tierz Constructora, responsible for completing the work within an estimated 16-week timeframe, targeting mid-January 2025 for its completion. Luis Ferreira, the director of the aerodrome, emphasized that this investment represents the most substantial undertaking since the aerodrome opened its doors in 1998, underscoring the commitment to the region’s aeronautical development.
In addition to the new hangar, the project includes plans for a designated area for the temporary storage of waste generated by the aerodrome activities. This complementary measure aims to enhance waste management, ensuring a cleaner and more organized environment for all operations within the aerodrome.
The primary aim for the new hangar will be to house an aviation workshop dedicated to general aviation. This facility will allow for the simultaneous operation of up to six aircraft and will include an open area, a painting booth, a technical office, and a storage area. Furthermore, the workshop will be authorized by the State Aviation Safety Agency to conduct maintenance on airplanes and gliders, thereby substantially increasing the aerodrome’s operational capabilities.
The Santa Cilia Aerodrome has historically been a hub for recreational aviation enthusiasts, providing opportunities for glider flights and related activities.
