Aragón positions itself as a European hub for digital innovation in climate action

The Institute of Technology of Aragón (ITA) is hosting the European event Advanced Technologies and Digitalisation for Climate Action in Agro-Forestry and Blue Economy for three days, an international forum that brings together researchers, companies, administrations, and innovation experts to promote technological solutions to climate change in the agroforestry and blue (marine) economy sectors.

Organized within the framework of the European project FOCAL (funded by Horizon Europe), the meeting aims to foster collaboration between various community initiatives, share knowledge, generate synergies, and accelerate the development of digital technologies applied to climate resilience.

Strategic Priorities of the EU

During the sessions, the priorities of the European Union regarding digital innovation will be discussed, with a particular emphasis on climate change adaptation in rural, forested, and marine environments. The central topics include:

  • The use of digital twins.
  • Advanced climate services.
  • Data-driven solutions for sustainable land management.

The program includes technical sessions, collaboration workshops among European projects, networking activities, presentations of success cases, and a visit to pilot projects in Aragón that demonstrate real applications of these technologies in forest and rural management.

The event targets a diverse audience: from technological SMEs to policymakers and regional authorities, highlighting the need for a multidisciplinary approach to tackling climate challenges. The ultimate goal is to strengthen the European climate innovation ecosystem and facilitate the deployment of scalable solutions that contribute to more sustainable environmental management.

Aragón, a Key Node in the Digital and Green Transition

During the inauguration, the director of ITA, Esther Borao, emphasized the strategic role of technology: «The transition to a climate-neutral economy requires the effective integration of advanced technologies and digital solutions in key sectors such as agroforestry.»

With such initiatives, Aragón is establishing itself as a relevant node in the transition towards a more digital, sustainable, and climate-resilient economy, attracting talent, projects, and European investment.

The event reflects the region’s increasing commitment to the dual transition —digital and ecological— and positions the Institute of Technology of Aragón as a reference point in the development of advanced technologies applied to the significant environmental challenges of our time.
