Jorge Azcón, President of the Government of Aragón, has called for the reopening of the railway axis Pau-Canfranc-Zaragoza, highlighting its strategic importance for connecting Spain and France through the Pyrenees. This proposal was presented at the European Committee of the Regions, in the context of the Draft Opinion on the Regulation of the ‘Connecting Europe’ Mechanism 2028-2034.
Azcón emphasized the significant logistical and industrial potential of the Pau-Canfranc-Zaragoza corridor. This axis would not only strengthen the connection between Spain and France but also position Zaragoza as a crucial node between the Atlantic and Mediterranean corridors. In a complex geopolitical context, Azcón underscored the need for diversified and operational transport networks to ensure connectivity and territorial development.
The reopening of this railway line is seen as an opportunity to boost economic growth and regional integration. Azcón argues that robust transport infrastructure is essential to tackle current and future challenges, thereby improving the region’s competitiveness.
The ‘Connecting Europe’ Mechanism and its impact on Aragón
The Government of Aragón has positively assessed the ‘Connecting Europe’ Mechanism, considering it a key tool to promote territorial cohesion and strategic resilience within the European Union. This mechanism, which extends until 2034, aims to reinforce transport, energy, and digitalization infrastructures throughout Europe.
Azcón highlighted the importance of this mechanism for enhancing Aragón’s competitiveness and its ability to integrate into trans-European networks. The continuity and strengthening of this tool are seen as crucial elements for the sustainable development of the region.
Cental Pyrenees Crossing and other strategic priorities
In addition to the reopening of the Pau-Canfranc-Zaragoza axis, Azcón proposed promoting the Central Pyrenees Crossing as an additional connection. This proposal responds to the need to create more resilient transport networks with greater capacity to handle saturation or interruptions.
Azcón also expressed his support for strengthening military mobility and European electrical networks, emphasizing the importance of having robust and versatile infrastructures that can adapt to future demands. These initiatives reflect a comprehensive approach to improving connectivity and energy security in Europe.
