CITA Drives Agricultural Diversification in Central Pyrenees with LIFE Pyrenees4Clima

The Research and Technology Center for the Agro-Food Industry of Aragon (CITA) is leading an innovative project in the central Pyrenees to promote agricultural diversification in mountainous areas. Under the framework of the LIFE Pyrenees4Clima project, this cross-border initiative seeks to adapt mountain communities to climate change, focusing on the cultivation of aromatic plants.

Agricultural Recovery in Espierre: A Pilot Case

In Espierre, Biescas, Huesca, a pilot case is being carried out that has revitalized agricultural land abandoned for over six decades. At altitudes ranging between 1,250 and 1,600 meters, plants such as fine lavender are cultivated for the production of essential oils for the pharmaceutical and perfume industries. The preparation of these plots has required a thorough process of clearing, stonelessness, and access conditioning.

This project not only aims at agricultural production but also seeks to revalue traditional knowledge and improve biodiversity, while also creating opportunities for agritourism in the mountainous region.

Collaboration and Leadership in Innovation

The Zaragoza entrepreneur Ignacio Guallart Balet plays a crucial role in the project, bringing his experience in ecological mobility and circular economy. On the other hand, the researcher Juliana Navarro from CITA leads the working group, emphasizing the importance of introducing crops adapted to climate change. Together, they are developing a manual of best practices with European recommendations to guide similar future initiatives.

The project not only provides high value-added products but also strengthens agricultural resilience and promotes the retention of rural populations by not competing with food crops, developing in marginal soils.

Structure and Scope of the LIFE Pyrenees4Clima Project

Coordinated by the Pyrenean Climate Change Observatory (OPCC), the project deploys the cross-border strategy EPiCC with 33 pilot cases in seven regions, including Aragon, which leads with 14 experiences. With a total budget close to 20 million euros, the project has 60% funding from LIFE funds.

Among the Aragonese partners are the Department of Environment and Tourism, CITA, FUNDESA, and several entities of the CSIC, such as the Pyrenean Institute of Ecology. This multidisciplinary collaboration aims to strengthen the resilience of Pyrenean communities to climate change, ensuring a sustainable future for these regions.
