The Spanish Air and Space Force has deployed part of its command and air operations planning structure to Mallorca for the first time. The activity is taking place from October 15 to 29 at Pollensa Air Base as part of the Sirio-Dragón-Tormenta 2026 exercise.
The deployment makes it possible to transfer some functions of Spain’s Joint Air Operations Center to an unprepared location. It does not involve moving the entire center, but rather personnel from its Combat Plans Division, which is responsible for preparing and coordinating the exercise’s air missions under the direction of Air Combat Command.
Part of the work is being carried out in deployable modules installed by the Mobile Air Control Group on the seaplane parking apron. The Second Air Deployment Support Squadron and the Management Information Technology Center are also involved in preparing the facilities, access points, communications, technical support and security.
Planning from an alternative location
According to the Air and Space Force, the activity is intended to assess whether planning functions can be maintained outside their usual facilities. The test includes setting up operational workstations, protecting temporary facilities and linking personnel preparing missions with the units responsible for carrying them out.
The operations planned in Pollensa are incorporated into the Sirio and Tormenta phases. The first covers the planning and execution of various Air and Space Force capabilities, while the second includes activities involving live ammunition.
The exercise coincides with the recent reclassification of the former Pollensa military airfield as an air base. During the maneuvers, the facility serves as a forward location for testing the transfer of personnel, equipment and command functions to an alternative site.
