Indra Group and the Government of the Principality of Asturias are moving forward with plans to establish an industrial, technology and defense plant at the Barros workshop in Langreo, after signing a memorandum of understanding for the future lease of a facility spanning approximately 16,000 square meters for 25 years.
Indra plans defense plant at Langreo’s Barros workshop
The Regional Promotion Company (SRP) and Indra Group have signed a document setting out the terms for the future lease of the property. The facility would be used for an industrial, technology and defense production plant, as well as offices, warehouses and other uses associated with the operation.
The lease agreement would run for 25 years from the handover of the facilities. The deal, however, remains subject to approval by the governing bodies of Indra Group and the SRP.
The Asturian government has committed to speeding up the purchase of the property in order to shorten the timeline for launching operations. The acquisition would allow the company to begin measuring, inspection, preparation and refurbishment work at the facility.
Project linked to industrial and defense activity in Asturias
The regional government places the project among initiatives aimed at generating new industrial activity in the mining districts, diversifying the Asturian economy and increasing the share of the technology and defense sectors. According to the statement, the future plant could also benefit subcontractors and suppliers.
Indra said the Barros facilities will play a role in national defense programs linked to the production of defense vehicles. Indra Group Chief Operating Officer Frank Torres said the agreement reinforces the company’s commitment to Asturias and the northern corridor, while also helping to create an industrial ecosystem linked to Europe’s defense sector.
Science, Industry and Employment Minister Borja Sánchez described the signing as a step toward turning the project into an industrial reality in Langreo, the mining districts and Asturias. David González, chairman of the SRP and CEO of the Sekuens agency, also took part in the presentation.
Barros lease follows purchase of facilities in Gijón
The deal is part of Indra’s moves in Asturias during 2025. That year, the company acquired the Duro Felguera Calderería Pesada facilities in Gijón to develop a factory related to military vehicles and land platforms.
In early October, the regional government had already announced an agreement in principle for Indra to occupy the Barros facilities for 25 years. The transaction is linked to the purchase of the property from Duro Felguera for approximately €10.7 million.
