AWS to Create Over 13,000 Jobs in Aragón with a $33.7 Billion Investment by 2035

Aragón has become one of the leading technological hubs in Europe following the expansion announced by Amazon Web Services (AWS), which plans to invest €33.7 billion in Spain by 2035 to strengthen its data center infrastructure and artificial intelligence services. A fundamental part of this investment will be concentrated in the Aragon region, where the company estimates that over 13,400 annual jobs will be created and an economic impact of €18.5 billion will be made on the regional GDP.

The American multinational inaugurated the AWS Europe (Spain) Region in November 2022, comprising three Availability Zones located between Zaragoza and Huesca. Since then, Aragón has gained strategic importance within Amazon’s international cloud infrastructure network, becoming one of the major European nodes for cloud computing.

The expansion was officially announced in March 2026 during the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona. There, Amazon confirmed a second major phase of expansion for its technological facilities in Spain, with new developments planned in Aragón and a strong commitment to the growth of artificial intelligence and advanced cloud services.

The project includes new data centers and associated developments in Zaragoza, Huesca, and also in the province of Teruel, reinforcing AWS’s presence in all three Aragonese provinces and expanding its technological capacity in southern Europe.

A multi-billion euro impact on the Aragonese economy

The anticipated economic impact places this operation among the largest technological investments in recent Spanish history. According to the estimates released by the company, the total investment will contribute €31.7 billion to the Spanish GDP by 2035 and sustain an average of 29,900 equivalent full-time jobs nationwide, including direct, indirect, and induced positions.

In Aragón, more than half of that economic impact will be concentrated. AWS estimates that the community will record around 13,400 annual equivalent full-time jobs, of which 4,200 will correspond to direct positions generated by Amazon.

These figures will be supplemented by approximately 1,800 additional jobs linked to new facilities related to the technological supply chain. The company plans to build an assembly and final testing plant for servers, a specialized logistics warehouse, and a facility for the manufacturing and repair of artificial intelligence and machine learning servers.

The expansion is also driving the growth of numerous Aragonese companies linked to engineering, construction, energy, specialized maintenance, and cloud services, shaping an increasingly powerful technological ecosystem around AWS.

Aragonese companies grow with data centers

One of the most notable cases is Hiberus Tecnología, which has reached approximately 3,500 employees and has more than 200 specialists in AWS services. The company has established itself as one of Amazon’s main technology partners in Spain.

Also noteworthy is Levitec, an Aragonese company that has multiplied its workforce in just five years, growing from 80 to over 400 employees thanks to opportunities generated by the construction and maintenance of infrastructure associated with data centers.

Meanwhile, ALAN Commissioning has grown from two employees to forty in just three years and has developed new specialized certifications recognized by the sector, contributing to the professionalization of the data center industry in Spain.

The AWS expansion is also increasing the demand for highly qualified profiles, such as electrical engineers, sustainability experts, hardware technicians, operations managers, logistics specialists, and security professionals.

Aragón expands its technological infrastructure with new developments

The expansion has already begun to materialize administratively. The Government Council of Aragón recently approved a new phase of the PIGA «AWS Region Expansion in Aragón,» promoted by Amazon Data Services Spain.

This procedure allows for progress from the urbanization phase to the effective construction of new buildings and electrical substations in Walqa (Huesca) and Villanueva de Gállego (Zaragoza). The projects include data centers, water treatment plants, fire protection systems, and electrical and mechanical infrastructures.

In the case of Teruel, the main focus is on the area around La Puebla de Híjar and Azaila, where new developments linked to AWS growth in Aragón are planned, along with the introduction of associated energy and logistics infrastructures.

Amazon strengthens its educational and social commitment in Aragón

In addition to the economic impact, Amazon has intensified its educational and community programs in Aragón. Since 2023, the company has supported over a hundred social and training initiatives in the community, with investments aimed at technological education, social inclusion, and sustainability.

Among the most highlighted programs is «Think Big Space,» a training initiative in robotics and technology that has already reached over 7,400 students from 45 educational centers in Zaragoza, Huesca, and Teruel. AWS also collaborates with the Government of Aragón through AWS Academy, a program designed to integrate cloud skills in IT vocational training that has already reached nearly 2,800 students.

Another project promoted by the company is AWS re/Start, aimed at unemployed individuals or those with little technological experience. This free program seeks to facilitate access to careers related to cloud computing and the digital economy.

Amazon has also launched community and sports programs alongside Real Zaragoza and SD Huesca, in addition to environmental initiatives and projects to promote rural entrepreneurship and digitalization in various Aragonese municipalities.

AWS drives energy efficiency and water management projects

Sustainability is another main focus of the project. AWS explains that its data centers in Aragón operate with 100% renewable energy from day one and highlights energy and water efficiency indicators that are above the industry average.

According to the company’s data, AWS reports a global energy efficiency index (PUE) of 1.15 compared to the usual 1.25 in the cloud industry and 1.63 for traditional data centers. In terms of water efficiency, the company claims to achieve levels 93% better than the average of the European sector.

Amazon has also announced investments of €17.4 million in water and environmental projects in Aragón. Among the planned actions are artificial intelligence systems to prevent floods in Zaragoza, smart irrigation programs for farmers in El Burgo de Ebro and Villanueva de Gállego, as well as the modernization of hydraulic infrastructures in Huesca.

The company is also working on building reservoirs to store rainwater intended for cooling its data centers and aims to return more water than it consumes before 2030.
