Aragon Sustains the Strength of Its Foreign Trade Despite May’s Slowdown

The Aragonese exports continue to demonstrate solid performance in 2026, despite a moderation observed in May following extraordinary growth since the beginning of the year. The region maintains a competitive foreign trade, bolstered by its strong industrial leadership, market diversification, and the recovery of its trade surplus.

In May, Aragonese companies exported products valued at 1.361 billion euros, while imports reached 1.179 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of 182 million euros, reversing the negative balance recorded in the previous two months.

The automotive sector remains dominant while capital goods gain prominence

The automotive sector continues to be the main driver of Aragonese exports. In May, it accounted for 27.45% of total sales abroad, solidifying its position as the activity with the largest weight in the region’s international trade.

Alongside it, the remarkable performance of capital goods stands out, now representing 17% of Aragonese exports and recording a growth of 10.32% compared to the same month last year, making it the leading driver of growth among the major export sectors.

New opportunities in international markets

Geographic diversification continues to offer opportunities for Aragonese companies. In May, exports grew by 14.69% to the Americas and 168.6% to Oceania, while Europe still accounts for the majority of external sales.

France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and Poland remain the primary destinations for Aragonese exports, followed by Morocco, the United States, and China.

Aragon recovers its trade surplus

The decline in imports during May allowed Aragon to regain a positive trade balance. Among the region’s main suppliers, China increased its sales by 2.48%, and Turkey recorded a growth of 20.99%, reflecting the dynamism of both markets.

A year that remains positive

Although May reflects a normalization after several months of exceptional growth, the overall balance for the year continues to be favorable. The strength of the Aragonese business fabric, the significance of strategic industrial sectors, and the growth of capital goods provide a basis for optimism regarding this trend.

The developments in the coming months will determine whether the adjustment observed in May is a temporary slowdown following the strong momentum from the beginning of the year or if it marks a new phase of more moderate growth in Aragon’s foreign trade.
