The Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Food of the Government of Aragon has strongly supported the «Best Oil of Bajo Aragón 2026» awards, an event that celebrates excellence in the olive oil sector in the region. Presided over by the acting counselor Javier Rincón, the ceremony took place in Alcañiz (Teruel), organized by the CRDOP Aceite del Bajo Aragón, highlighting the importance of this product in Aragonese cultural identity.
Recognitions for Quality in the Olive Oil Sector
The award for the best oil of Bajo Aragón 2026 was granted to the Association for the Recovery of Abandoned Olive Trees in Oliete (Teruel), recognizing its work in revitalizing traditional crops. The Matarraña Oil Cooperative in Calaceite (Teruel) received the second prize, while the third place went to Molino Alfonso from Belchite (Zaragoza), all exemplifying a commitment to quality and tradition in oil production.
A special recognition, the «Empeltre Award 2026,» was given to the Jubierre Cros family for their dedication to the care of the El Pitongo olive tree, an emblematic tree of Bajo Aragón located in Calanda (Teruel). This olive tree, dating back to the 18th century and standing over seven meters tall, is a symbol of the agricultural wealth of the region, producing around half a ton of olives annually.
Institutional Commitment to the Olive Oil Sector
During the ceremony, counselor Rincón emphasized the «strategic value» of Aceite del Bajo Aragón, describing it as a product that embodies the identity and effort of generations of farmers. Rincón stressed the importance of advancing in innovation and promotion, highlighting initiatives such as the campaign ‘Aragón, Sabor de verdad’ and the agreement with the Regulatory Council to maintain the Virgin Olive Oil Tasting Panel of Aragon in Alcañiz.
The commitment of the Department of Agriculture to the olive oil sector was reaffirmed by Rincón, who noted that institutional support is essential to improve the quality, competitiveness, and recognition of Aragonese products. This backing is crucial for the ongoing development and positioning of Aceite del Bajo Aragón in national and international markets.
