The City Council of Cariñena, through its Department of Culture, has organized the IV Conference on Film, Wine, and Gastronomy, which will take place on December 12, 13, and 14 at the Cine Olimpia in the town starting at 6:00 PM. This initiative was presented this morning in the press room of the Zaragoza Provincial Council and is part of the special program organized in honor of Cariñena’s designation as a European Wine City.
The event continues the working theme that has characterized the town in promoting connections between the seventh art, the culture of wine, and gastronomy. The cultural programming of these days is financed by the Zaragoza Provincial Council and the Zaragoza Chamber of Commerce.
The delegated deputy of Culture, Charo Lázaro, highlighted that “the combination of film, wine, and gastronomy not only enriches the cultural offer but also enhances the projection of local products and talents from the province,” adding that these days “generate tourist activity and, therefore, economic activity, establishing themselves as a meeting space that fosters collaboration among professionals from different fields, institutions, and citizens.”
For her part, the Deputy Mayor of the City Council of Cariñena, Sara Morales, pointed out that in a year like this, with Cariñena being designated as a European Wine City, “we could not forgo a cultural event like this,” noting that the objective of these days is “to showcase our environment, heritage, culture, and gastronomy,” complemented by the participation of local hospitality establishments.
Javier Calvo, film director and coordinator of the conference, stated that the new edition continues the level of its predecessors with a lineup centered on some of the most notable films shot in Cariñena. He noted that on Friday, December 12, a discussion will be held with director Julio Medem, accompanied by filmmaker Luis Alegre, followed by the screening of the film “Tierra.”
The following day, Saturday the 13th, “Cariñena, Vino del Mar” will be screened, and a discussion will take place with him as director and team members Irene Tudela and Gonzalo Alonso. It will be moderated by journalist Antón Castro, author of the novel on which the film is based.
On Sunday, December 14, “Gigantes y Cabezudos” will be screened, featuring a live performance by DJ Mr. Pendejo, who will reinterpret the soundtrack. Afterwards, there will be a final discussion with Fernando Sanz and Santiago Paniagua.
Culinary Proposal
Gastronomy will once again play a prominent role in the conference. Various bars and restaurants that are partners of the Campo de Cariñena Wine Route and/or the Cariñena Hospitality Association will offer special tapas and menus created with nods to the seventh art: Astoria, Bodegas Care, Casa Marzo, Entreviñedos, Hamburgo 13, La Bodega, La Cantina, La Rebotica, Los Toneles, and Tierra de Cubas. The culinary proposals will be paired with the Corona de Aragón wine “Garnacha de Goya,” from Grandes Vinos.
The City Council of Cariñena invites residents and visitors to enjoy a new edition of these conferences, which pay homage to local culture through film, wine, and gastronomy.
A Consolidated Trajectory
The Conferences on Film, Wine, and Gastronomy of Cariñena began their journey in 2008 and have since become a cultural reference in the town.
The first edition was held in 2008, from May 15 to 17, and included screenings, a children’s culinary workshop, a wine tasting, and a tasting of Jamón de Teruel.
In 2013, the II Conferences took place, under the name Cine, Gastro y Vino, on November 23 and 24, featuring discussions, tapas, wines, cinematic meals, and the children’s workshop “The Magic of Cinema.”
The III Conferences were held in 2017, from November 24 to 26, by the Department of Culture in collaboration with Álvaro Monzón, the Campo de Cariñena region, the Wine Route of the Stones, and the Zaragoza Provincial Council. They also served as the framework for the first meeting of the Reading Club, Cinema, Gastro, and Wine of the region.
