The Aragonese Oil Shines: the EU Grants DOP to Somontano Oil
The EU has published in its Official Journal the official registration of the DOP «Somontano Oil.» The Department of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food celebrates this recognition as the result of decades of rigorous work. The product is multivarietal, made with at least 85% of native varieties such as Albareta, Alcampelina, Caspolina, Cerruda, Negral de Bierge, and Verdeña. It is characterized by its sensory complexity, notes of green fruitiness, and absence of astringency. The DOP covers 42 municipalities in central Huesca with strict controls: processing the fruit within 24 hours, a maximum milling time of 60 minutes, controlled temperature, and indoor storage. With this designation, Aragón adds a total of three DOPs for oil: Bajo Aragón in Teruel, Sierra del Moncayo in Zaragoza, and Somontano in Huesca.
