Preventing Fraud is in Your Hands: Essential Tips for Safe Navigation in the Digital World

Can you imagine leaving the door of your house wide open? Something similar happens when you do not protect your personal information online. Today, you handle many tasks from your mobile or computer: you talk to your family, shop, book trips, or manage your money. Therefore, knowing the risks and how to act is key to moving around the digital environment with peace of mind.

From Go Aragón, we have compiled these tips from the Financial Education program of Ibercaja in collaboration with Funcas. Financial culture for everyone. The aim is to help you identify potential fraud attempts and avoid becoming a victim, through clear, practical, and easy-to-apply information.

The good news is that you do not need to be an expert to protect yourself. With the right information and some simple habits, you can reduce risk and continue enjoying all the advantages that technology offers.

The 8 rules for your safety

Protecting yourself online does not require technical knowledge or great effort. It is enough to internalize some basic rules that, applied in everyday life, act as a shield against many frauds.

Start by downloading only the applications you actually need, and always do so from official stores or trusted websites. Avoid unknown links or vague recommendations. Likewise, it is important not to connect to public Wi-Fi when you are accessing your bank or entering personal data and to use secure networks or your own mobile data.

Keeping devices updated is another key gesture, as many updates fix security flaws. This is complemented by the importance of not browsing unknown websites and not installing files that you have not requested.

Be wary of any link that leads you to enter personal or banking information, even if it seemingly comes from a known company. Also review the privacy and security options of the applications and social networks you use.

Finally, use secure passwords, different for each service, change them frequently, and never share them. And remember: never share your personal data online.

Protect yourself when shopping online

Shopping online is convenient and safe if you know what to look for before paying. A first step is to check that the website has clear contact information, a legal notice, and visible return policies. If something does not fit, it is better to stop and verify.

Be cautious of excessively low prices or offers that seem too good to be true. In many cases, that urgency is exactly what scammers are looking for. It is also important to pay attention to payment methods: always use secure options, such as cards, Bizum, or mobile payment systems, and avoid pages that only accept transfers or other unusual methods.

Even if you see the padlock and «https,» do not let your guard down. Some fraudulent websites also include them. Therefore, check real reviews and the quality of information before proceeding.

After shopping, do not save payment details, log out, keep the receipt, and review the transactions on your bank account.

Safety in your bookings and rentals

There are increasingly more attempts at scams related to vacation rentals. Fraud often starts with very attractive ads and prices well below the market.

To avoid surprises, use only recognized and trusted platforms, cross-check reviews on various websites, and carefully review the descriptions of the accommodations. It is essential never to pay outside the platform or through links sent via WhatsApp or email.

Be especially wary of messages that pressure you to pay quickly or insist that the offer will disappear. These recommendations are also very useful for students and young people looking for temporary rentals, such as in the case of an Erasmus program.

How to protect your elders from potential fraud

Older individuals can be more vulnerable to certain digital frauds, especially if they are not familiar with technology. Here, information and support make a difference.

One of the most common scams is the «urgent child» fraud, where a supposed family member requests urgent money via WhatsApp. In the face of any such message, the most important thing is to remain calm and always verify the identity by calling the usual number or contacting them through another channel.

False technical support, emails or SMS impersonating banks or official organizations, and fake prizes or lotteries are also common. Help them remember to never share passwords, codes, or banking information, and that, in case of doubt, it is always better to do nothing and consult.

How to protect your children from potential fraud

Teaching your children to protect themselves from online fraud is also part of their financial education. Even though they navigate the digital environment with ease, that does not mean they identify all the risks.

It is important for them to learn to distrust suspicious messages, fake giveaways, overly easy job offers, or requests for money via Bizum. Remind them not to share personal data, photos, or passwords with strangers.

Explain the importance of shopping only on official platforms and always using internal payment systems. And, above all, let them know that if something happens, they should tell you as soon as possible to be able to act in time.

How to protect your business from potential fraud

Businesses, especially small and medium ones, are also targets of online fraud. Emails impersonating suppliers, last-minute changes to bank accounts, or unauthorized access are some common examples.

To protect your company, it is essential to train your team to identify suspicious messages and verify any changes in payment data through an alternative channel. Additionally, use secure passwords, enable two-factor authentication, keep systems updated, and regularly perform backups. A good tip is to save employees’ and suppliers’ accounts in the digital banking agenda.

Prevention not only avoids financial losses but also provides peace of mind and continuity to the business.

Preventing fraud is not about living in fear, but about acting with knowledge. With clear information, simple habits, and a little attention, you can navigate the digital world with greater security.
