Huesca Province: The World’s Best Destination for Adventure Sports

In previous editions of the World Travel Awards, the province of Huesca has always received praise and awards for its abundant adventure tourism offerings. However, it was in the 2025 edition held in Bahrain that these coveted international awards granted the highest trophy to the Aragonese province. Huesca has been crowned the Best Adventure Destination in the World, surpassing other renowned locations in Canada, Scandinavia, and New Zealand.

This award is due to the privileged nature of Alto Aragón, combined with many years of collaborative work by sports clubs, specialized companies, and entities supporting various initiatives in different areas of adventure tourism. These are the pillars of this extraordinary recognition. On one hand, it is a reward for around 500 companies that develop countless projects and activities throughout the province. More than 4,000 professionals make up the fabric of the adventure industry in Huesca.

The second pillar of this award is the extensive catalog of adventures that can be experienced in the Alto Aragonese territory. Not only in the Pyrenean mountains, but also in the surrounding foothills and even in flatter and drier landscapes. This is something that the jury of the World Travel Awards has recognized, as it is a distinguishing feature compared to other destinations. A multitude of disciplines can be practiced in various settings, whether terrestrial, aerial, or aquatic, year-round.

The winter rigor is one of the major attractions of the province due to the various ski resorts located at the head of the Pyrenean valleys. The offer of alpine skiing is a significant economic pillar. In winter, there are many more adventure and outdoor sports available, such as Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding, and ice climbing.

Climbing is practiced year-round in the province. Rocky outcrops abound, and some walls, such as those of the Mallos de Riglos or the Sierra de Guara, are legendary. There are also climbers ascending peaks in the Pyrenees that exceed 3,000 meters.

Another way to explore the paths is by mountain bike. Areas such as Sobrarbe have some of the most lively mountain biking routes. Whether on foot or by pedal, it’s important to choose routes that match experience and equipment, as well as to be advised by specialized guides.

Aquatic activities also stand out. The canyons of the Sierra de Guara are references for canyoning in Spain and Europe. There are itineraries that combine swimming, jumps, and rappelling. Additionally, rafting can be practiced on rivers like the Gállego, and kayaking in the province’s reservoirs. In some reservoirs, it is also possible to dive among the ruins of the submerged village of Mediano.

Finally, flying as an adventure activity is of great relevance. In Castejón de Sos, paragliding is especially popular due to its exceptional conditions. There are also autogyro and glider flights available in other areas such as Aínsa and Santa Cilia.
