The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, has signed an agreement today in Beijing to establish a Strategic Diplomatic Dialogue Mechanism between Spain and China. The signing took place during the official visit of the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, to the People’s Republic of China.
This mechanism, initially agreed upon in October 2025 by Ministers Albares and Wang Yi in Hangzhou, aims to provide regularity and predictability to high-level meetings between the two countries. With it, Spain equips itself with a tool similar to that already possessed by other European partners such as France and Germany.
The new Strategic Diplomatic Dialogue Mechanism will be chaired by the respective Ministers of Foreign Affairs and will address bilateral, regional, and global issues of common interest. Additionally, it will serve to promote and monitor the Action Plan 2025-2028, which embodies the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2025.
During today’s events, Minister Albares accompanied President Pedro Sánchez in several activities, including a meeting with the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, and with Prime Minister Li Qiang. Within the framework of this visit, a total of 19 bilateral agreements have been signed covering economic, commercial, cultural, and scientific-technological fields.
The signing of this strategic dialogue mechanism strengthens the structure of bilateral relations and seeks to enhance cooperation in priority areas, maintaining a stable channel of high-level diplomatic communication.
This initiative is part of Spain’s strategy to strengthen its relationships with key global actors through formal and structured dialogue mechanisms.
