Aragón Demands Electric Investments in Light of Economic Collapse Risk
The Government of Aragón has reported the saturation of the regional electricity grid following the publication of capacity maps by the electricity companies. The Vice President and Minister of Presidency, Economy, and Justice, Mar Vaquero, attributes this situation to the lack of energy planning by the Government of Spain.
Official data reveals that 94.3% of the electricity distribution capacity in Aragón is saturated, surpassing the national average of 84.3%. In the case of Endesa, the company can only offer an additional 256 MW of capacity out of the already occupied 4,216 MW. Of the 13 nodes with available capacity, the 54 MW from Magallón, the 33 MW from Tarazona (Lanzas Agudas) in Zaragoza, and the 7 MW from Olba in Teruel stand out.
Criticism from the Aragonese Government
Mar Vaquero believes that this saturation is a result of the lack of planning and investment in energy infrastructure by the Government of Spain, which threatens Aragón’s prospects as a renewable energy generator. The Vice President has emphasized the inconsistency of the Government of Spain between the goal of electrifying the economy, generation, and consumption.
Vaquero has reminded that Aragón is a leader in renewable energy generation and exports 54% of its total generation, but it cannot convert this potential into employment or growth if the central government continues to block demand tenders and discourage investments from distributors.
Measures Demanded from the Central Government
The Government of Aragón has identified three main causes of the problem: the lack of agility in the planning of the transmission network, the blockage in the resolution of demand tenders, and the remuneration policy that prioritizes high-consumption areas over those seeking growth.
To resolve this situation, the Aragonese Executive demands from the Government of Spain:
- An agile and coherent planning that allows Aragón to take advantage of its energy potential
- A fair and stable remuneration model that incentivizes investment in electricity distribution and transmission infrastructure
- The immediate resolution of pending demand tenders in Aragón and throughout Spain
