Huescómic, the Huesca Comic Day, will celebrate its thirteenth edition on September 13, focusing on manga produced in Spain. The event will bring together two prominent authors who have addressed hearing disabilities through fantasy in their works, consolidating a creative movement that combines Japanese style with social themes.
The Featured Authors
Alba Cardona, born in Barcelona in 1992, holds a degree in Graphic Arts from the Joso School, where she currently works as a teacher. Her career includes work as a colorist for Image Comics and Insight Editions, as well as the comic adaptation of the novel ‘La chica invisible’ by Blue Jeans for Planeta Cómics in 2021, a project that earned her a nomination for Best New Author at Comic Barcelona 2022.
Her most recognized work is ‘La leyenda de Hakutaku’ (ECC, 2024), a standalone volume that tells the story of a girl with a hearing disability who must confront a legendary dragon threatening her village. She is currently developing projects for the French market, where she has published ‘Emma et les mauvais éléments’, and collaborates with animation companies.
Joan C., born in Lleida in 1983, made his debut in 2022 with ‘Okaasan’ after winning the Norma Manga Contest in 2021. In 2023, he published the comic ‘Wild Kids’ in the magazine Planeta Manga, and he plans to release his new work ‘Eterno Yoshio’ through Norma Editorial in the fall of 2025.
‘Okaasan’ tells the story of Midori, a young single mother who returns to her hometown with her deaf and mute son, where they both face challenges adapting to rural life with the help of a small ghost.
The Event and Its Features
The talk will take place at the Manuel Benito Moliner Cultural Center and will be moderated by Sara Soler, an author born in Barbastro in 1992 who has worked for American and Spanish markets, as well as teaching comic classes at the Escola Joso.
Both Cardona and Joan C. have been published in the magazine Planeta Manga and are known for combining fantastical elements with a social perspective, particularly focusing on disability.
Huescómic is organized by the Huesca City Council in collaboration with the specialized media Viñetario.com.
