Ibercaja Celebrates 150 Years of History as a Driving Force in Economic and Social Development

Few organizations can claim to have contributed to the economic, social, and cultural transformation of a region for a century and a half. Ibercaja has reached this milestone and has decided to celebrate it by looking both backward and forward. This year, the financial institution commemorates its 150th anniversary with a public event in Zaragoza and an exhibition that traces its evolution from its founding as a savings bank in 1876 to its consolidation as one of Spain’s leading banking groups.

The headquarters of the institution, located in the heart of the Aragonese capital, has become the epicenter of this celebration with the opening of the exhibition «150 years working for you», a showcase that explores the history of the institution through historical documents, heritage pieces, audiovisual material, and interactive experiences.

This anniversary transcends corporate commemoration. In an era marked by technological acceleration, the transformation of the financial system, and changes in the relationship between banks and society, the anniversary also provides an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of an entity that was established to promote popular savings and now manages a business volume exceeding €110 billion.

The inauguration brought together institutional, business, and social representatives from Aragon, reflecting the significant role that Ibercaja has historically played in the economic development of the community. Regional and municipal authorities, together with representatives from business organizations and foundations linked to the Aragonese economic fabric, participated in an event that highlighted the close relationship between the financial institution and the territory where it was founded a century and a half ago.

From Zaragoza to the fifty Spanish provinces, Ibercaja’s expansion represents one of the most notable examples of the transformation of a regional savings bank into a national financial entity. However, beyond financial indicators, the institution asserts its unique ownership model within the Spanish banking sector: all of its capital belongs to foundations stemming from former savings banks, with Fundación Ibercaja being its main shareholder.

This model has allowed for the maintenance of a vigorous social, cultural, and educational activity that is part of the organization’s historical identity. For decades, programs supporting education, culture, sports, and social inclusion have accompanied the financial activities of the institution, strengthening a connection with society that continues to occupy a central place in its institutional discourse.

The commemorative exhibition is precisely a synthesis of this trajectory. The journey begins with the origins of the former Caja de Ahorros y Monte de Piedad de Zaragoza, created in a Spain undergoing profound economic and social transformations. From there, the visitor moves through different stages that showcase the evolution of banking activities, from manual records and the first savings books to today’s digitized processes.

One of the most attractive spaces is the so-called «time tunnel,» where historical objects, work tools, and original documents allow visitors to observe how the management of savings, credit, and customer relations has changed over several generations.

The exhibition also pays special attention to the evolution of corporate communication and the brand itself, utilizing historical advertisements, graphic materials, and audiovisual elements that reflect how both society and the ways of relating to it have evolved.

But perhaps the most significant message of the exhibition is the emphasis placed on people. Employees, customers, and citizens emerge as the true builders of a story that spans 150 years and has accompanied some of the key episodes of economic modernization in Aragon and Spain.

The programming designed for this anniversary aims to deepen that connection with the public. Throughout the inaugural day, cultural activities, interactive proposals, augmented reality experiences, and musical performances open to the public were held. Among them, the concert by Aragonese singer Elem, who performed a composition created specifically for this commemoration, stood out.

However, the celebration will not conclude in Zaragoza. Ibercaja has announced a calendar of activities that will extend over the next twelve months in various regions where the institution maintains a significant presence. The goal is to carry the commemoration beyond its place of origin and share with clients and citizens a story that is part of the recent evolution of the Spanish financial system.

Reaching 150 years is an exception in any economic sector. Doing so in the banking industry, characterized by deep regulatory, technological, and social transformations, also serves as an indicator of adaptation and resilience.

The exhibition «150 years working for you» does not aim merely to recall the past. Its journey presents a reflection on how an institution can evolve without losing certain identity traits. In the case of Ibercaja, the closeness to the territory, social orientation, and Aragonese roots emerge as elements that have survived the changes of time.

From a small savings bank founded in the 19th century to a financial entity present throughout Spain, Ibercaja’s history also reflects part of the country’s economic history. And in a community like Aragon, where the institution has been part of the institutional and business landscape for generations, the anniversary acquires a significance that transcends numbers and balances.

Because, after all, the 150 years that Ibercaja celebrates today speak not only of a financial organization. They also reflect the evolution of thousands of families, businesses, and projects that, in one way or another, have shared a part of their own history with it.
