The Government of Aragón has approved the Declaration of Investment of Autonomous Interest for the Zaragoza-WIND Data Center Campus project in Botorrita, driven by Merlin Properties. This ambitious project, with an investment of €1.2248 billion, promises to transform the economic and technological landscape of the region.
A significant economic and labor boost
The project approved by the Government Council, led by President Jorge Azcón, not only represents a substantial investment but is also projected to act as an employment engine for Aragón. During the construction phase, the project is expected to create 5,040 jobs, of which 1,109 will be direct. In the operational phase, the data center will generate an additional 520 jobs, distributed among direct, indirect, and induced positions. This hiring strategy will prioritize local talent, ensuring that the economic benefits remain within the community.
Furthermore, the economic activity derived from the project is expected to contribute €17.46 million annually in personal income tax (IRPF) during construction and €3.07 million during the operational phase, significantly boosting the public coffers of Aragón.
Innovation and sustainability at the heart of the project
The campus will be located in the San Antonio Industrial Park, covering 28.8 hectares and featuring a built area of over 156,000 square meters. Designed to be a state-of-the-art data center, the project already boasts a guaranteed power supply of 227.4 megawatts, allowing for computing capacity of 144 MW IT. Merlin Properties also considers a possible expansion that would increase capacity to 240 MW IT, depending on energy availability.
One of the most notable features of the project is its focus on energy efficiency. It will use a closed-loop modular cooling system, eliminating water consumption and achieving a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.15. This index far exceeds the European and global average, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and reducing energy consumption.
