The Technological Institute of Aragon (ITA) is actively participating in the European Ambiance project, which aims to revolutionize the manufacturing of urban furniture through the use of bio-based materials and circular economy models. This week, a showroom is being presented at the Praza de Barcelos in Pontevedra, showcasing the results of four years of research and a budget of €4.57 million.
Sustainable Innovation in the Ambiance Project
The Ambiance project, driven by the ITA, aims to transform the urban furniture industry through circular economy principles and advanced technologies. With a budget of €4.57 million, this initiative spans four years, displaying its results in a public showroom in Pontevedra. The exhibition features furniture made from bio-based materials, underscoring ITA’s commitment to sustainability.
The event in Pontevedra serves as an urban laboratory where prototypes developed by the project’s international consortium, coordinated by ITA, are tested. Among the Spanish partners are MONDO, Aimen, and Setga. Innovations such as large-format benches and loungers manufactured using 3D printing, as well as artificial grass and sustainable decorative panels, are showcased.
Advanced Technologies for Sustainable Production
The Ambiance project integrates advanced digital technologies, including digital twins and artificial intelligence, to monitor production and ensure the quality of the final product. These advancements enable environmental impact reduction by up to 70%, optimizing material use and minimizing waste generation. This strategy not only enhances sustainability but also accelerates the transition to a circular economy.
Additionally, the project has organized a technical seminar titled “From Lab to Industry: Advanced Tools for Enabling Bio-Based Manufacturing,” aimed at equipping the industry with advanced tools for bio-based manufacturing. Manuel Laspalas, an ITA researcher, opened the sessions with a presentation on physics-based simulation models, highlighting their role in optimizing production processes.
Impact and Future of ITA in Urban Sustainability
Through the Ambiance project, ITA reinforces its position as a European leader in advanced technologies applied to sustainability and industrial digitalization. These initiatives not only contribute to the development of more resilient and circular cities but also promote a significant shift toward more sustainable industrial practices. The combination of technological innovation and environmental commitment positions ITA as a key reference in the transition to a more sustainable future.
