Spring Excursion to Juslibol’s Galacho

The continuous storms that have battered the beginning of 2026 promise splendid spring months, a fabulous time of year to go outdoors and enjoy nature. Even without leaving the municipality of Zaragoza, it is possible to walk through a surprisingly wild area like the Galacho de Juslibol.

The Galacho is just a step away from the ACTUR neighborhood. In March, the Tren El Carrizal reconnects the neighborhood with the wetland north of the capital. This little train takes just 20 minutes to link the city with the galacho, passing through the village of Juslibol and the paths at the foot of the plaster cliffs of the Ebro Valley.

The Tren El Carrizal arrives at the entrance of the Galacho Visitor Center, a space promoted by the City Council to raise awareness about the site and its natural values. This center organizes environmental education activities for schoolchildren and the general public.

The area offers incentives for an outing, ideal for groups of friends or family, with a picnic area and children’s play structures at the beginning of the protected space in the Natura 2000 Network.

Galacho de Juslibol

The galacho, an abandoned meander of the Ebro River, was formed after a flood in 1961. Although disconnected from the river at the surface, it continues to be nourished by its underground waters, creating a vibrant wetland that houses flora and fauna near Zaragoza.

Spring is particularly notable in the galacho for its calm waters and dense vegetation, attracting birds such as ducks, coots, and herons. The habitat is rich despite the presence of invasive species like the catfish. Additionally, the riverside woodland around it hosts diverse trees and wildlife.

Higher up, the area of the gypsum escarpment offers a contrasting environment with less vegetation, but is home to other species like kestrels and weasels. From the escarpment, one can enjoy views of the wetland, the orchards, and iconic landmarks of Zaragoza.

Preparing a visit to the Galacho de Juslibol is advisable, especially by consulting the environmental education activities program.
