Matarraña Strengthens Its Presence at the XXV Wine Fair in Cretas

The Matarraña, with its rich winemaking tradition, is establishing itself as a reference point in the Aragonese landscape thanks to institutional support and the promotion of quality projects. At the recent XXV Wine Fair in Cretas, Javier Rincón, Acting Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food, highlighted the region’s potential, emphasizing the importance of this event that brought together thousands of visitors and has solidified its role as a key showcase for the wines of the province of Teruel.

Support for the Wine Sector and Institutional Recognition

During the fair, Rincón underscored the event as a symbol of territorial identity and a recognition of the collective effort of the province. Additionally, he received the distinction of Ambassador of the Wine Fair 2026, a recognition he accepted on behalf of the wine sector, reaffirming his institutional commitment to support the wines of Matarraña and the Aragonese sector as a whole.

The Minister also emphasized the project of Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP) for the Matarraña, describing it as an initiative deeply rooted in the territory. He assured that the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food would accompany and support this initiative, showing clear backing for the small and medium-sized wineries that characterize the region.

Territorial Linkage and Productive Structure

The wines of Matarraña are distinguished by their strong connection to the territory, with a productive structure based on small and medium-sized wineries that produce around 200,000 bottles. The sector comprises approximately 16 wineries distributed across more than 80 municipalities in Teruel and Zaragoza, including historic cooperatives, family initiatives, and emerging wineries.

Rincón contextualized this initiative within the broader Aragonese sector, mentioning established denominations such as Cariñena, Campo de Borja, Calatayud, and Somontano, and advocating for the need for Teruel to have its own Denomination of Origin in the wine world, grounded in history, quality, and uniqueness.

Projection and Future of Wine in Aragon

The XXV Wine Fair in Cretas not only promotes the wines of Matarraña but also facilitates meetings between professionals and the public, reinforcing Aragon’s projection as a land of wine. The event solidifies itself as a benchmark that drives the promotion of these wines, highlighting the quality and uniqueness that characterize them.

With institutional support and the commitment to projects like the DOP, Matarraña is shaping up to be a region with a promising future in the wine sector, contributing to Aragon’s recognition at both national and international levels.
