Leciñena Hosts the Fifth Monegros Dance Encounter

The V Dance Meeting of Monegros will be held for the first time in Leciñena, bringing together eleven municipalities from the region in an event that aims to celebrate the dance as cultural heritage. With the participation of approximately 400 dancers and 1,500 attendees, the event promises to be a milestone in promoting this tradition.

Leciñena as a Cultural Epicenter

The event, scheduled for next Saturday, April 18, will take place in Leciñena, Zaragoza, and will involve municipalities from the Monegros region. These include Leciñena, La Almolda, and Bujaraloz from Zaragoza, as well as Castejón, Lanaja, Pallaruelo de Monegros, Robres, Sariñena, Sena, Tardienta, and Valfarta from Huesca. This gathering is an opportunity for these communities to showcase their rich cultural traditions.

The mayor of Leciñena, Andrés Picazo, has expressed his satisfaction in hosting the event, highlighting its importance in introducing local cultural heritage to new generations. The day will include a parade that will culminate in the Plaza de la Iglesia de la Asunción, where each municipality will perform.

Importance of Dance in Local Culture

Cristina Palacín, delegate for Tourism, emphasized the significance of the dances of Monegros, which stand out for their richness and variety. According to Palacín, these dances are an ethnographic practice that reflects the life of the people in the area, their intangible cultural heritage, and their authenticity. Salvador Trallero, president of the Coordinadora de los Dances de los Monegros, added that these dances are fundamental to the culture, history, and folklore of the region, acting as a driving force for territorial development.

The dance is a cultural expression that combines music, dance, and theatrical representation. Its performances include paloteao, music from the bagpipe, and praises dedicated to local patron saints. In many municipalities, their ancient structures have been recovered, thereby preserving their historical legacy.

Event Program

The program of the meeting will begin at 9:30 AM with the reception of the participating groups. At 10:30 AM, a parade will traverse the town to the Plaza de la Iglesia de la Asunción, where performances will take place. Subsequently, attendees will be able to enjoy a meal at the municipal pavilion and a concert by the Leciñena Music Band.

Moreover, during the day, the traveling exhibition La Cardelina will be available at the Matías Calvo Exhibition House, offering a complete cultural experience for all attendees.
