The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has launched an ambitious pavement rehabilitation project on the Northern Ring Road of Zaragoza, impacting the A-2 freeway and its connector ramps. With a budget of €4.3 million, the works will take place over the weekend, resulting in significant traffic disruptions and detours.
Scope of the Works on the A-2
The surface rehabilitation works on the A-2 cover a section of 17 kilometers and will extend over the coming months of 2026. This project aims to improve the uniformity and wear resistance of the pavement, which will prolong its lifespan and enhance road safety. The specific section being carried out this weekend is located between kilometers 314 and 315 heading towards Barcelona.
The project focuses not only on the main trunk of the freeway but also includes the connector ramps, ensuring a comprehensive improvement of the infrastructure. The total investment is aimed at ensuring greater safety and efficiency on one of the busiest routes in Zaragoza.
Traffic Disruptions and Detours
During the weekend, there will be significant road closures and detours implemented for the works. Traffic heading towards Barcelona will be diverted to the descending lane, towards Madrid, between kilometers 318.1 and 312.5. Additionally, there will be a progressive lane reduction from kilometer 310.4 to a complete closure at kilometer 311.6.
Access to the freeway from interchanges 311 (Plaza), 312 (connection with Ronda Sur), and 315 (Miralbueno/Airport) will also be affected. Alternative routes have been established, which will be clearly signposted to minimize the impact on drivers.
The works have been scheduled for the weekend to reduce inconveniences on weekdays when traffic is heavier. The General Directorate of Traffic will enhance communication through Variable Message Panels to keep drivers informed at all times.
Objectives and Context in the Road Network of Aragón
This intervention on the A-2 is part of an ongoing effort by the Ministry to improve road infrastructure in Zaragoza. In addition to these works, contracts worth €78 million have been awarded for the maintenance and operation of more than 581 kilometers of the State Road Network in Aragón. These actions underscore the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing road safety and efficiency in the region.
Through these initiatives, the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility aims not only to improve the current conditions of the roads but also to prepare the infrastructure for the future, ensuring it can safely and efficiently accommodate the increasing volume of traffic.
