Aragón and Huesca Begin River Isuela Renaturalization in 2026

Aragón and Huesca Begin Work to Renaturalize the Isuela River

The Government of Aragón and the City Council of Huesca will soon start the technical work for the renaturalization of the Isuela River as it flows through the capital of Huesca. The Minister of Environment and Tourism, Manuel Blasco, and the Mayor of Huesca, Lorena Orduna, visited one of the areas planned for intervention, describing the project as strategic for 2026.

Minister Manuel Blasco noted that the project requires the approval of a new budget in 2026 to ensure its funding, defining it as a commitment from the Government of Aragón and the City Council of Huesca towards environmental and urban improvement in the city. Mayor Lorena Orduna highlighted that this is a highly requested action that will bring the river even closer to the citizens, making it an integrating element for leisure.

The visit marks the beginning of technical work between the Department of Environment and Tourism and the City Council of Huesca to update the preliminary project by the council that could not be developed in 2022 due to the lack of European or state funding. Both institutions will work together to determine priority actions and define a plan of action to resume the renaturalization of the river environment.

The first step will involve reviewing and updating the previous technical project or, if necessary, drafting a new one. Once this phase is completed, the City Council of Huesca will be able to tender the works with the financial collaboration of the Government of Aragón.

The action area covers more than 53 hectares between the Marcelo springs and the Salas area, divided into three sections: the upstream section of the urban area, between the Marcelo springs and the San Miguel bridge (three kilometers long); the urban section (1.5 kilometers); and the downstream section up to the Salas hermitage (1.6 kilometers). Priority actions will focus on recreational areas located upstream and downstream of the urban area.

The restoration of the banks and the river renaturalization of the Isuela will allow the city to recover the river as a green axis, simultaneously improving its conditions against potential floods and flood prevention. This action aligns with the project that the Government of Aragón is developing on the Huerva River, with an investment of 23 million euros in collaboration with the city councils of Zaragoza and Cuarte.
