Aragón Government Invests 110,094 Euros in Illueca Altarpiece

The General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Government of Aragón has announced the restoration of the retable of Santa Orosia in the parish church of San Juan Bautista in Illueca, with an investment of 110,094.57 euros and a completion period of five months following the award.

The project includes the dismantling, packing, and transportation of the retable to the workshop of the awarded company. Restoration treatments will be carried out on the canvases and the perimeter molding, as well as the sanitation of the chapel walls to eliminate moisture. Technical supervision will be handled by the Conservation and Restoration Service, which will also be responsible for documentation, material studies, and the preparation of a final report with a preventive conservation plan.

The church of San Juan Bautista, where the retable is located, was declared Cataloged Good of Aragonese Cultural Heritage in 2002. The retable of Santa Orosia is a Registered Good and consists of six oil paintings on canvas, framed with gilded wooden molding that simulates a baroque retable, featuring representations of Santa Orosia and scenes from her life.

The bidding for the restoration will be active until July 28, 2025. The project was initially commissioned in 2024 to the company Antique S.L., which submitted the project document in April 2025. The total investment amounts to 110,094.57 euros, VAT included.

The restoration of the retable of Santa Orosia will address the severe deterioration in the lower area and edges, mainly caused by moisture. Once the work is completed, the retable will be returned to its original location, thus completing the intervention.
