The New Monastery of San Juan de la Peña has completed an ambitious rehabilitation and modernization project, notably marked by its investment in façade restoration and the creation of a virtual reality experience. This effort, led by the Government of Aragon, has involved a total investment of 3,736,960.23 euros, executed between September 2023 and 2025.
Rehabilitation and Modernization of the New Monastery
The restoration of the facades of the New Monastery, costing 391,400 euros, has been a meticulous process that addressed the issues caused by the mountainous climate and humidity. The interventions included cleaning, stone consolidation, crack sealing, and the recovery of sculptural elements, thus preserving its Baroque architecture characterized by vertical bodies and flanking towers.
Additionally, 1,517,621 euros were allocated for heritage interventions and tourism enhancements. These actions ranged from the restoration of the church to the modernization of visitor services, including the renovation of the shop, creation of exhibition spaces with virtual reality, and improvements to the café. A digital transformation plan was also implemented, expanding Wi-Fi access and creating a sensory garden in the cloister.
Improvements in the Guesthouse and Cross-Cutting Actions
The guesthouse of the Monastery also underwent a comprehensive renovation, focusing on updating climate control, lighting, and security systems. Equipment in the rooms, common areas were improved, and the kitchen and dining areas were reinforced, including work on the spa.
Cross-cutting actions, with an investment of 1,530,000 euros, concentrated on modernizing facilities and management systems, improving energy efficiency, and renewing sewage networks. These upgrades encompassed both the New and Old Monasteries, ensuring an updated and efficient technical infrastructure.
The Old Monastery received 150,000 euros for the replacement of service roofs, execution of concrete slabs, and improvements in accessibility and lighting of pathways. Furthermore, a future phase is planned with a budget of 340,000 euros for the implementation of audiovisual equipment in the church, enhancement of the café, and construction of restroom kiosks, among other actions.
