The Denomination of Origin Somontano concludes the 2025 harvest with 15.5 million kilos of grapes
The Protected Denomination of Origin Somontano completed its 2025 harvest on October 9 with a total of 15,536,507 kilos of grapes collected. The yield was significantly lower than initial forecasts due to heat and lack of rainfall during the summer, marking it as the fifth shortest harvest in the last twenty years for this quality wine label from Huesca.
The harvest began on August 11 with the white grape chardonnay and concluded yesterday with the red variety parraleta. Although the dates are similar to usual years, the campaign progressed at record speed: more than 90% of the grapes were already collected in the wineries by September 13.
The abundant rainfall during spring had led to predictions of a plentiful harvest. However, a heat wave at the end of June and the absence of rainfall during the summer resulted in smaller-sized fruit, significantly reducing the initial forecast estimates.
On September 13, a hailstorm occurred, which, since more than 90% of the grapes had already been harvested, did not generally affect the growers and wineries. However, it did damage some plots of late-ripening varieties that had not yet been harvested in several municipalities of Somontano.
The harvesting was conducted progressively according to the ripening period of each variety. The earliest to be harvested were the early ripening varieties such as chardonnay, gewürztraminer, and merlot, followed by tempranillo, pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, riesling, syrah, garnacha blanca, macabeo, and alcañón. The last varieties to be harvested were cabernet sauvignon, moristel, garnacha, and parraleta.
The good health of the grapes and their harvest at the optimal ripening moment ensure the characteristic quality of Somontano wines. The white, rosé, and young red wines from this harvest will soon be available on the market.
