Teruel Launches Medical Degree with 45 New Public Places

Teruel launches its Medical Degree program this Monday at its new faculty, housed within the Obispo Polanco University Hospital. The start of the 2026-2027 academic year, inaugurated by Aragon regional president Jorge Azcón, brings these studies to public campuses in all three provinces for the first time and raises the number of annual medical school places in Aragon to 410.

Teruel adds 45 public medical school places to Aragon’s university system

The new degree program begins with 45 places affiliated with the University of Zaragoza. These are in addition to the 220 places in Zaragoza and 45 in Huesca, bringing the region’s total to 310 public medical school places.

The offering is completed by the 100 places at Universidad San Jorge, giving Aragon 410 places for new entrants to train future doctors. In 2023, the region had 225 places, compared with 410 in the current academic year.

Azcón linked the expansion of the program to the shortage of doctors in numerous municipalities across Aragon. He said the introduction of the degree in Teruel is intended to strengthen the training of health care professionals and attract young talent to the province.

Teruel’s Faculty of Medicine shares space with Nursing at Obispo Polanco

Teruel’s Faculty of Medicine is located at the Obispo Polanco University Hospital, where students from the Teruel School of Nursing have also begun the academic year. The teaching building has five classrooms for lectures and clinical case discussions.

The facilities include five teaching laboratories for Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biology-Genetics, and Histology-Anatomy. The center also has a computer lab and a dissection room for anatomy practicals, which students will begin using in the second semester.

More than €3.2 million for the teaching building at the new Obispo Polanco University Hospital

The Aragon Health Service has allocated more than €2.5 million for the construction of the new Medicine and Nursing teaching building. The Department of Education has invested nearly €725,000 in equipping the facilities.

The faculty’s opening coincides with the launch of the new Obispo Polanco University Hospital, which has been operational since September 1. The building triples the floor space of the former hospital, increases inpatient beds and doubles the number of single rooms, expanding Teruel’s health care and teaching capacity.
