Javier González: «Sustainability Is No Longer an Option: Any Company Can Progress with a Clear and Decisive Plan»

The Aragonese business fabric continues to take firm steps towards a more responsible and sustainable model, and the event «Uniting Companies for a Responsible and Sustainable Aragón» is a testament to this. Organized by Go Aragón and Éboca, this gathering brings together professionals and companies this Friday with the aim of sharing experiences, generating alliances, and reflecting on the role they can play in environmental protection and in the development of a more sustainable Aragón.

The meeting features the participation of the Zaragoza Aquarium Foundation and the Aragon Hospitality and Tourism Business Confederation, providing a technical and sectorial perspective on current challenges in conservation, environmental education, and corporate responsibility. Moreover, the initiative is supported by the Huesca Excelente business forum, reinforcing the inclusive character of the event and its commitment to the region.

In this context, one of the most prominent speakers will be Javier González, Technical Director of the Zaragoza Aquarium, whose scientific vision and experience in environmental management are particularly valuable for this forum.

During your presentation at the event, what are the main messages you want to convey about sustainability and responsible management from the Zaragoza Aquarium? The fundamental message is that sustainability can no longer be considered an optional choice. In today’s world, companies and institutions have the obligation to work sustainably, both for social responsibility and as a matter of coherence with the demands of the market itself.

Why do you believe that the experiences and learnings from the aquarium can be useful for Aragonese companies? Because we have accumulated a decade of real experience applying concrete measures: from the installation of more efficient pumps and variators to the implementation of photovoltaic plants, LED lights, and improvements in air conditioning. All that learning is transferable to other companies, regardless of the sector.

From the technical and scientific perspective of the aquarium, what projects would you highlight as benchmarks? Beyond the investment in technology, a fundamental part of the progress has been the training of the staff. Having the best machinery is useless if those who operate it do not understand its impact. The greatest achievement has been the reduction of water consumption. Between 2014 and 2025, we have reduced water consumption by 35%.

The event gathers companies from different sectors. What opportunities do you see for effective collaboration? First, there is a clear economic opportunity. Sustainable improvements often translate into savings. Second, there is an opportunity for differentiation. Organizations that incorporate sustainable practices generate more trust and loyalty. Third, there is a moral obligation. Working in alignment with nature always yields better results.

What real impact do you think environmental education has on society? It works better when there is direct interaction. Guided tours are effective: when someone explains to you what is done, how it is done, and why, the visitor understands the importance of conservation better.

Éboca participates as the organizing company for the event. How do you assess their involvement? Very positively. Éboca demonstrates that sustainability is not a slogan, but a real practice. We see it in the way they work, in their facilities, and in concrete projects such as the new reusable coffee containers.

What final message or recommendation would you convey to advance towards a more conscious and sustainable Aragón? That sustainability is here to stay. It is not debatable or optional. That it is not as difficult as it seems: what is important is to have a clear, measurable plan and to review it annually. Much can be achieved with little investment.
