The Zaragoza City Council has announced a 17% increase in the budget allocated to improving and enhancing the competitiveness of the city’s markets, reaching €600,000 for the current fiscal year. As a significant new feature of this funding round, all retailers will be able to apply for direct grants for the first time to renovate their stalls, thereby boosting local commerce and modernizing commercial equipment in various neighborhoods.
The local retail landscape in the Aragonese capital is receiving a new economic boost. The Zaragoza government has confirmed the imminent approval of a new grant program focused on revitalizing, improving, and digitalizing the city’s wholesale markets, both public and private. This strategic initiative will be funded with €600,000, representing an increase of €100,000 compared to the budget allocated the previous year.
The measure, which will be officially presented later this week, aims to ensure that these spaces remain «lively, attractive, and competitive» in the face of evolving consumption trends, as explained by Carlos Gimeno, counselor for Economy, Digital Transformation, and Transparency at the Zaragoza City Council.
A more accessible and inclusive support program
The main new feature introduced in this edition is direct access for individual stall owners. Unlike previous calls for proposals, which focused exclusively on associations or community owners, this year any retailer, without distinction, can apply for grants to make structural or aesthetic improvements to their businesses within the market.
This line of aid is also open to entrepreneurs looking to establish new stalls, a measure aimed at combating commercial vacancies in the galleries and generating greater appeal and variety of services for local residents.
During the project presentation at the Delicias shopping center, Gimeno emphasized that markets «are not only shopping points but also meeting places, economic drivers, and neighborhood hubs, essential for a more balanced, sustainable, and connected city.» In this very area of Delicias, municipal grants have enabled investments totaling €120,897 since 2020, aimed at installing new air conditioning systems, renovating facades, and upgrading basic infrastructure.
Two areas of focus: infrastructure and digitalization
To optimize the scope of the grant, the City Council has structured the funding call into two main financial categories:
-
Investment Line (€500,000): Intended to cover expenses related to structural renovations, modernization of spaces, improvements in energy efficiency, and renewal of essential equipment and facilities.
-
Current Expenditure and Revitalization Line (€100,000): Aimed at financing the digitalization of commercial activities, the development of online sales channels, social media management, marketing, and loyalty activities to adapt businesses to new digital consumption realities.
Application procedures and deadlines
Interested parties, whether they are merchant associations, community owners, managing entities, or stallholders operating within the municipal boundaries of Zaragoza, must submit their applications entirely online.
The established deadline will be 20 calendar days, starting from the day following the official publication of the bases in the Official Gazette of the Province of Zaragoza (BOPZ). All detailed information and technical requirements will be available to the public on the City Council’s official website.
