Some 130,000 insured hectares had reported damage as of August 31, with hail, rain, and wind among the leading causes. The Government of Aragon is allocating €12 million this year to subsidize agricultural insurance premiums
Estimated compensation for claims recorded in Aragon’s agricultural sector during 2026 has already exceeded €50 million. As of August 31, damage had been reported on around 130,000 insured hectares, according to data provided by Agroseguro to the Government of Aragon.
Storms have made a significant contribution to that total. Episodes of hail, rain, and wind have resulted in claims on nearly 57,000 hectares of insured crops. These losses are compounded by damage caused by drought, wildlife, and fires.
The figures were disclosed during a working meeting between the Aragon Government’s Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Food and representatives of Agroseguro, where both sides reviewed claims trends and the operation of public aid for purchasing insurance policies.
The 2026 total extends several years of high claims activity among farms in Aragon. Between 2021 and 2025, Agroseguro and the insurers participating in Spain’s Combined Agricultural Insurance system paid €454 million in compensation in Aragon. In four of those five years, claims exceeded premiums, according to data provided by Agroseguro.
A year marked by storms
Weather events during the spring and summer have affected a range of agricultural products. As early as May, Agroseguro warned of the intensity of hailstorms recorded since April across several parts of Spain, including Aragon, affecting fruit trees, field crops, vineyards, and horticultural production.
Storm activity continued throughout the summer. By mid-August, Agroseguro had recorded claims on more than 122,000 hectares in Aragon and estimated compensation at €46 million. Additional claims received through the end of August subsequently raised the total to approximately 130,000 hectares and more than €50 million.
Developments in recent years have increased the importance of insurance as a tool to cover part of the losses caused by weather events and other risks included in policies. The system combines premiums paid by farmers and livestock producers with public subsidies intended to reduce their cost.
Aragon allocates €12 million for premiums in 2026
The Government of Aragon has earmarked €12 million this year to subsidize agricultural insurance premiums. The aid applies to policies under the 2026 Plan and to certain lines under the 2025 Plan whose subscription period remains open this year.
The cooperation agreement between the regional government and Agroseguro also allows the Aragon subsidy to be applied directly when a policy is purchased. As a result, farmers and livestock producers do not have to advance the amount covered by the regional aid and subsequently apply for reimbursement.
Following the meeting, Agriculture, Livestock and Food Minister Arancha Simón defended the role of the insurance system in protecting farm income against claims. She also said the direct application of the aid is intended to reduce administrative burdens for industry professionals.
The figures available through August do not yet represent the final total for 2026. The agricultural season is still ongoing, and final compensation will depend on how claims develop and on damage assessments in the coming months. For now, estimated compensation in Aragon has surpassed €50 million, while the area reported as affected stands at around 130,000 hectares.
