Japanese semiconductor equipment manufacturer TOWA Corporation plans to build a new plant in Kyoto Prefecture to expand its production capacity in Japan. According to Asia Business Outlook, the project entails an investment of approximately $31.6 million, although the report does not specify a construction timetable or an expected start date for operations.
TOWA manufactures molding equipment and precision molds used in the semiconductor assembly and packaging stages. The future facility will be located in the prefecture where the company is headquartered and has other operations, and is expected to address growing demand for advanced packaging technologies.
An investment still in the planning stage
The announced figure represents a planned investment rather than spending already incurred. The publication attributes the amount to reports citing TOWA management and says the new plant would increase domestic production and enable the company to serve customers more efficiently.
The company expects growth in chips for artificial intelligence applications to drive demand for processors, high-bandwidth memory, and more advanced packaging solutions. TOWA has positioned the expansion within its long-term growth strategy, TOWA Vision 2032, which includes investments in technology and industrial capacity.
The company also believes that maintaining additional capacity in Japan could help make its operations more resilient to potential disruptions in international supply chains. For now, this remains a business expectation linked to the project, rather than an effect already demonstrated.
