Aragón Wins British Council Award for Bilingual Education

The British Council has awarded Aragón a prestigious recognition at the UK-Spain British Council Awards, celebrated during its 85th anniversary in Spain. This award highlights the role of the autonomous community in strengthening educational cooperation between the United Kingdom and Spain, thanks to its participation in the Bilingual Educational Programme.

The recently established awards aim to honor both collective projects and individual careers that have significantly contributed to educational and cultural exchange between the two countries. This recognition focuses on the 30 years of educational collaboration that has emerged since the inception of the Bilingual Educational Programme in 1996, which was renewed last year.

Ana Moracho, General Director of Educational Policy for the Government of Aragón, received the award on behalf of the involved autonomous communities. Moracho emphasized that bilingual education is more than just a linguistic tool; it is a pathway to cultural diversity, critical thinking, and global citizenship.

Aragón, a leader in bilingual education

Aragón stood out particularly as the autonomous community with the largest number of educational institutions affiliated with the programme, totaling 54. This includes 37 schools in Zaragoza, 10 in Huesca, and 7 in Teruel, covering both primary schools and secondary institutes.

Other awardees and the ceremony

Alongside Aragón, other entities and individuals were also honored. Among them are the National Association of British Schools in Spain (NABSS), the Fundación Teatro La Joven, the Association of Language Teaching Centres of Andalusia (ACEIA), and the National Organization of the Spanish Blind (ONCE). On an individual level, Sheila Cremaschi, Paul Preston, and María González Durán received recognitions.

The ceremony took place at the residence of the British ambassador in Madrid, under the presidency of Sir Alex Ellis and Sylvia Edvinsson, director of the British Council in Spain, who highlighted the importance of these educational and cultural ties.
