Aragón has a geological heritage that can strengthen specialized tourism and create jobs in rural areas. The director general for the Natural Environment, Óscar Fayanás, presented geodiversity as a resource for education, conservation and local economic development during the 2nd Geology and Society Conference at the University of Zaragoza, held on November 5, 2026.
Aragón’s geological heritage expands opportunities for rural tourism
Under the title «Geodiversity: the hidden jewel of natural heritage», Fayanás reviewed the region’s wide range of landscapes and geological formations. This heritage makes it possible to interpret the area’s natural history and turn it into a source of knowledge and an attraction for visitors.
The presentation included the red sandstone formations of Rodeno and the landscapes of Ordesa y Monte Perdido. In this National Park, geology and glacial activity have shaped some of the most distinctive sites in the Aragonese Pyrenees.
Enhancing these resources, as discussed at the conference, can diversify municipalities’ tourism offerings and strengthen public outreach on natural heritage. Geotourism therefore offers a way to link visits to the region with a better understanding of its landscapes.
Dinópolis and geoparks highlight geodiversity’s economic potential
Fayanás argued that conserving natural heritage is compatible with local economic development. Interpreting geological sites and incorporating them into tourism products can generate economic activity and support job creation tied to the region.
Examples cited included Dinópolis and the geoparks of Sobrarbe-Pirineos and el Maestrazgo. These resources bring geological knowledge closer to visitors and turn it into a tourism attraction linked to the distinctive features of each county.
Digitalization, immersive experiences and augmented reality also offer opportunities to broaden the reach of geotourism. Developing specialized, high-value offerings can boost activity in rural areas by drawing on their own resources, without requiring major investment.
