The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has awarded a contract worth 21.5 million euros for the maintenance and operation of the Somport tunnel and its accesses in Huesca. This project, which will initially span three years with the possibility of extension, aims to improve the road infrastructure and optimize public resources.
Scope and Coverage of the Project
The contract covers a total of 9.815 kilometers of road, distributed across two specific routes: from kilometer 666.2 to 672.4 of the N-330 road and from kilometer 115.2 to 118.8 of the RN-1134. Additionally, it includes the surface rehabilitation of the pavement on the French side of the Somport tunnel, a responsibility assigned to Spain under the bilateral agreement with France.
This comprehensive approach not only guarantees the improvement of the infrastructure but also ensures constant and efficient maintenance, which is vital for the safety and functionality of the tunnel.
Comprehensive Services and Operations
The works included in the contract encompass a wide range of services: accident surveillance and response, winter road maintenance, tunnel control and communication services, as well as facility maintenance. This mixed contract model, which combines services and construction, aims to provide a comprehensive mobility service.
The implementation of these services will not only improve the condition of the roads but also optimize the use of public resources, ensuring efficient and sustainable maintenance.
Commitment to Sustainability
A prominent aspect of the contract is its alignment with sustainability goals. The bidding documents include measures to mitigate and compensate for the carbon footprint, focusing on a reduction of 71,640 tons of CO2 annually. Starting in 2023, the awarded companies must present a decarbonization plan to achieve a net carbon balance within five years.
This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, promoting reliable infrastructure (SDG 9), safe transportation systems (SDG 11), economic growth (SDG 8), and energy efficiency (SDG 7).
